**What is Bellydance? **

Bellydance, Arabic dance or belly button. We hear these terms very often but, do they mean the same?

These are questions that, as a dance teacher, I get asked very often.

Definitely yes.

But this dance does not belong to any country in the Arab world.

It is a dance style product of the collection of emblematic steps from the different countries of the East, mixed with the stylization of ballet and contemporary dance, fused with other styles of traditional dances such as flamenco, folk music like samba or modern music like reggaeton.

It is typical of the Western world and armed especially for shows.It is what is basically taught the most popular dance schools in the American and European continent.

Unlike oriental folklores such as dabke, Nubian dances, derbiche twist, saidi, Persian style or Turkish.

My personal experience, of more than 25 years in the practice and teaching of belly dance in Latin America, make me appreciate this style of dance as an entity of my own and with an individual personality.

There is no denying that belly dance had a rise in popularity in the Western world thanks to the Colombian singer Shakira.

Thanks to this, a very interesting commercial panorama was opened for the dancers of the Arab world, who began to travel around the world teaching their art, as well as musicians and singers.

And it also provided the opportunity for me as Western dancers to become renowned professionals and run prestigious schools.

That is why belly dance should be recognized as a dance genre with its own characteristics and be respected for its scope that goes beyond the artistic space, influencing professional careers and the economy that all those who have made life around the marketing of belly dance.

Qué es el Bellydance?

Bellydance, danza árabe o danza del vientre. Escuchamos estos términos con mucha frecuencia pero, significan lo mismo?

Son preguntas que, como maestra de danza, me hacen con mucha frecuencia.

Definitivamente sí.

Pero atención, este baile no pertenece a ningún país del mundo árabe.

Es un estilo de baile producto de la recopilación de pasos emblemáticos de los distintos países del oriente, mezclados con la estilización de ballet y la danza contemporánea, fusionados con otros estilos de bailes tradicionales como el flamenco, folklóricos como la samba o modernos como el reggaeton.

Es propio del mundo occidental y armado especialmente para espectáculos.

Es lo que básicamente se enseña las escuelas de danza más populares en el continente americano y europeo.

A diferencia de los folklores orientales como el dabke, las danzas nubias, el giro derbiche, el saidi, el estilo persa o el turco.

Mi experiencia personal, de más de 25 años en la práctica y enseñanza del belly dance en Latinoamérica, me hacen apreciar este estilo de baile como una entidad propia y con personalidad individual.

No se puede negar que el belly dance tuvo un repunte de popularidad en el mundo occidental gracias a la cantante colombiana Shakira.

Gracias a ello, se abrió un panorama comercial muy interesante para los bailarines del mundo árabe, que comenzaron a viajar por todo el mundo enseñando su arte, al igual que músicos y cantantes.

Y también brindó la oportunidad a míles de bailarinas occidentales de convertirse en profesionales de renombre y dirigir prestigiosas escuelas.

Es por ello que, al belly dance, debe reconocersele como género de baile con características propias y ser respetado por su alcance que va más allá del espacio artístico, influyendo en carreras profesionales y en la economía que todos aquellos que han hecho vida en torno a la comercialización del belly dance.
Espero que tú también te unes para este homenaje y reconocimiento de este género de danza bien sea como practicante o admirador de ella.
