En una entrevista recientemente publicada por @fermionico, el usuario @davot escribió un comentario solicitando información acerca de qué hace falta para iniciar un testigo en Hive. Ante el llamado del autor a los testigos hispanos, para que le diéramos respuesta a esa inquietud, me comprometí a hacerlo y acá lo comparto con todos los que tengan esa misma curiosidad o interés.

En primer lugar, quiero aclarar que con "testigo" acá, nos referimos al nodo, al servidor, es decir, a la computadora donde correrá el programa que es Hive y que permitirá interconectarse con el resto de la red.

En este caso, testigo no se refiere a quien lo lleva, como individuo ni comunidad, sino al equipo físico, a la máquina.

Un requisito fundamental, para quien quiera iniciarse con un testigo, es que él mismo tenga conocimientos de comandos Linux. Al menos debe tener a alguien que lo domine, pues al ser Hive concebido para correr en Ubuntu, la terminal de comandos es la vía para entrar en la configuración y en la mayoría de campos que se van a requerir.

Los comandos Linux no son nada de temer. En internet hay infinidad de cursos gratuitos y de guías como esta.

Opción 1

Para quien dispone de una buena computadora, buena conexión a internet, energía eléctrica muy estable y que, adicionalmente tenga la capacidad de conseguir una dirección IpV4 o IpV6, es esta una opción interesante.

Recuerdo que el testigo @cervantes operaba desde una laptop, en Alemania.

Esta modalidad tiene la característica de que tú tienes que encargarte de todo, desde la instalación, actualizaciones de sistemas operativos y todo lo que la máquina pueda requerir, hasta los programas adicionales, hard forks y demás, incluyendo la supervisión del buen funcionamiento del programa.

Tiene la ventaja de que no tienes que contratar servidores, ni depender de terceros, en cuanto a equipo.

First of all, I would like to clarify that by "witness" here we mean the node, the server, that is, the computer on which the Hive program will run and which will allow interconnection with the rest of the network.

In this case, witness does not refer to the individual or the community, but to the physical equipment, the machine.

A basic requirement for anyone who wants to get started with a witness is that he himself has knowledge of Linux commands. Or at least have someone who does, since Hive is designed to run on Ubuntu, and the command terminal is the way to enter the configuration and most of the fields that will be required.

Linux commands are nothing to shy away from. There are plenty of free courses and guides like this one on the Internet.

Option 1

For those who have a good computer, a good Internet connection, very stable electrical power, and who also can get an IpV4 or IpV6 address, this is an interesting option.

I remember that the witness @cervantes was operating from a laptop, in Germany.

This modality has the characteristic that you have to take care of everything, from installation, operating system updates and everything that the machine may require, to additional programs, hard forks and so on, including the supervision of the proper functioning of the program.

It has the advantage that you do not have to hire servers, nor depend on third parties, in terms of equipment.

Opción 2

Una de las alternativas más populares, es esta, debido a la sencillez para iniciar en ella. Se trata de una empresa que ofrece el servicio de alquiler de nodos. Se trata de la empresa Privex, que tiene entre sus productos, uno llamado Hive in a Box, que te ofrece el servidor con el sistema operativo y con Hive ya preinstalado en él.

Además resulta una alternativa muy económica, pues tienen dos planes que están entre los 50 y los 70 dólares al mes. La diferencia es la capacidad de memoria Ram, en cada uno de ellos.

Tienen servidores en Estados Unidos, Finlandia y, regularmente, también en Suecia (aunque en este momento no están disponibles).

Una característica muy apreciada por los usuarios que prefieren el anonimato, es que Privex tiene la política de No KYC (No Know Your Customer), es decir, que no piden información personal de quienes contratan el servicio, sino que se limitan a un nombre de usuario y una dirección de correo electrónico.

Y otro elemento destacable y que lo hace una magnífica opción, es que permite pagar en criptomonedas, incluyendo Hive y HBD.

Opción3

La descentralización de Hive depende de que existan muchos testigos distribuidos por todo el mundo. Es decir, que no es bueno que todos se concentren en una sola empresa.

Ante esta necesidad, el amigo @guiltyparties me recomendó una empresa alemana, que ofrece un excelente servicio en alquiler de servidores dedicados. Hetzner ofrece la más amplia variedad de posibilidades, en cuanto a características de los equipos, que te pueden permitir instalar un nodo básico, hasta el sistema más complejo que te puedas imaginar, incluyendo servidores de respaldo, nodos de consulta o lo que quieras.

Aunque aquí no existe un paquete, como Hive-in-a-box, cuentas con un equipo de soporte técnico, de pronta y eficiente respuesta. Algo que muchas veces falla en Privex.

Sin embargo, esta alternativa es más costosa. Yo estuve viendo alternativas y creo que una opción para Hive, estará costando por encima de los 130 dólares mensuales. Pero contando con equipos mucho más robustos que los que nos ofrece la opción 2.

Esta empresa es solo un ejemplo. Cualquier otra que ofrezca el servicio de contratación de servidores, puede funcionar, pero asegúrate de que se trata de una empresa seria, que garantice el funcionamiento de tu nodo y que dé el soporte necesario.

Bien, creo que esta información de entrada ya es una buena guía para quien quiera entrar en la aventura de iniciar su testigo en Hive. Evidentemente, hay mucha más información que manejar.

One of the most popular alternatives is this one, due to the simplicity to get started with it. It is a company that offers a node rental service. Faced with this need, my friend @guiltyparties recommended me a German company that offers an excellent service in dedicated server rental. Hetzner offers the widest range of possibilities, in terms of equipment features, which can allow you to install a basic node, up to the most complex system you can imagine, including backup servers, query nodes or whatever you want.

Even though there is no package here, like Hive-in-a-box, you can count on a technical support that responds quickly and efficiently. Something that often fails in Privex.

However, this alternative is more expensive. I was looking at alternatives and I believe that an option for Hive will cost over $130 per month. But with much more robust equipment than the ones offered by option 2.

This company is just an example. Any other company that offers the service of hiring servers can work, but make sure that it is a reputable company, that guarantees the operation of your node and that provides the necessary support.

Well, I think that this information is already a good guide for those who want to enter the adventure of starting their witness in Hive. Obviously, there is a lot more information to handle.
