This is yet another drumming piece from a Drumeo student collaboration piece. I am just not sure I will get around to recording the whole song before the deadline that is in a couple of days.
The song is Don't Stop Believin' by Journey. It is unusual in a couple of ways. There is hardly any drumming in the first minute of the song and when it does start the technique is unusual. Most drummers cross their arms to play the high hat and snare as it just tends to work well. For this song you uncross them as the right hand has a lot of work to do around the kit.
You cannot really see it on the video, but you may hear that the bell of the ride cymbal gets lots of attention. Using that and playing 'open handed' are both new to me. I just recorded some of the patterns used. It gets more complex as the song goes on and I may not be totally up to full speed.
I have enjoyed the challenge of playing this anyway. Learning a new technique is always useful. I had some hopes of recording the drum part and even adding the guitar solo as that is not a particularly hard one, but I may have to do that some other time.
I have been doing various lessons on Drumeo lately. There was a 'workout' specifically for this song, but I have to slow it down a little. I also had another rehearsal with the band where I took the kit. I really need to work out what I need to get ready before our big gig. Better cymbals and drum skins are on my wish list.
Rock on!
