MUSIC: Tribute to Artists We Lost in 2023 (ENG/ESP): PART 4 - Sinead o' Connor!

I hope you are having a wonderful start to 2024, and that it is going to be a good, productive year for you.

Looking back at 2023, quite a few famous songwriters and musicians passed away. I thought I would do a series of weekly posts about some of them, as well as attempt to cover one or two of the songs that made them so famous.

Here is a list of some of the musicians and songwriters that passed away in 2023, that I will be researching and trying to cover:

Let’s get cracking with Number 4 on my list: Sinead o’ Connor!

Sinead o’ Connor was an Irish singer-songwriter, and was probably most famous for her haunting performance of the song “Nothing Compares to You” – most people should know this one:

But that was actually written by Prince. So I thought I would rather cover the very first song on her debut album – it is called “Jackie”, and it is a haunting story of a fisherman’s wife who becomes a ghost so she can continue to wait for her man who never returns from the sea…

I must be honest, that when I play this song I am usually inspired by the version I heard first as a young man – a cover by Placebo that I absolutely love:

Besides her music, Sinead o’Connor was well known for speaking out against issues like racism. Her most controversial criticisms were about the abuse, including child abuse, of the Catholic Church. In 1992, she famously tore up a picture of the Pope during an appearance on Saturday Night Live, later pointing out that she felt that the Catholic Church was partly responsible for the physical, sexual and emotional abuse she had suffered as a child, and that Catholic priests had been abusing children for years.

She faced huge criticism and backlash for this, including being booed off stage and being unable to perform her tribute song at her appearance at the Bob Dylan 30 year Celebration Concert a few weeks later. Kris Kristofferson was the host of the evening… In this video, you can see him comfort her, with a backtrack of a little song he wrote to praise her bravery:

Nine years later, Pope John Paul II finally admitted that there was child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.

Throughout her career, Sinead o’ Connor often spoke about social justice issues, her spirituality and her struggles with mental health. She eventually converted to Islam in 2018.
