HIVE OPEN MIC #163 (ENG/ESP): Theme: Love of the Art - "Kwela Man" by Johnny Clegg / Juluka!

Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! I am definitely going to do a South African cover song today!

Welcome to Week 163 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for the week is “Love of the Arts"! You can be sure that I took that to mean Love of the Musical Art, or even love of a specific kind of music – in this case, a traditional South African style of street music, usually played on guitar and pennywhistle, called “Kwela”.

The song I have chosen is called “Kwela Man”, and it is by Johnny Clegg’s first band, Juluka. If you read the lyrics, they seem to describe Johnny Clegg’s own discovery and fascination with traditional Zulu street guitar styles like Maskandi and Kwela:

When Johnny Clegg was a young white teenager living in Johannesburg, South Africa, his stepfather ran away to Australia with his baby half-sister, leaving him and his mother behind. Obviously this was very traumatic, but it also left him without a father figure. He landed up being drawn to the masculinity and friendship of local Zulu migrants who had come up from the province of KwaZulu-Natal to his hometown of Johannesburg to find work.

Even though this all happened during the middle of the Apartheid era in South Africa, when racial segregation was heavily enforced by the Government and police, Johnny took the risk of learning the isiZulu language and culture, and started to learn the traditional Zulu guitar styles of maskandi and kwela, as well as the traditional Zulu styles of dancing and stick-fighting. After a bit of skepticism about what this white boy wanted, his Zulu friends realised that he was definitely in earnest about wanting to learn, and was a fantastic musician and dancer, and they accepted Johnny Clegg as an honourary Zulu.

He formed a band (Juluka) with a good friend, Sipho Mchunu, that perfectly blended Western Music with traditional Zulu music. In time, the music would become a celebrated symbol of the fight against Apartheid and racial segregation in South Africa!

Sipho Mchunu eventually retired to go work his farmstead in the (then) Zululand part of South Africa, and Johnny Clegg eventually became very successful with his second band (Savuka) that also had a multi-racial cast and blended Western and Zulu styles. He became famous in Europe too where the French referred to him as "le Zoulou Blanc" (the white Zulu).

So… “Kwela Man” is a song about a man who gave his life and soul to Traditional South African music, by a man who risked a lot to also give his life and soul to bringing Traditional South African Music to the world! I think that’s a good fit for the “Love of the Art” theme!

¡Hola a todos en Hive y especialmente a la comunidad Hive Open Mic! ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! ¡Definitivamente voy a hacer un cover de una canción sudafricana hoy!

Bienvenidos a la semana 163 del Hive Open Mic Challenge. ¡El tema de la semana es "Amor por las artes"! Puede estar seguro de que lo tomé como Amor por el arte musical, o incluso amor por un tipo específico de música, en este caso, un estilo tradicional sudafricano de música callejera. música, generalmente tocada con guitarra y silbato, llamada “Kwela”.

La canción que he elegido se llama “Kwela Man”, y es de la primera banda de Johnny Clegg, Juluka. Si lees la letra, parece describir el descubrimiento y la fascinación de Johnny Clegg por los estilos tradicionales de guitarra callejera zulú como Maskandi y Kwela:
