HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 66 Third Round (ENG-ESP): "Working Class Hero" John Lennon vs Green Day

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 66 / Round 3 of the Hive Music Festival!

Let’s continue the theme I thought of for weeks 64 to 66 (and maybe beyond), where I tackle some songs that were originally released by one artist or band, but also have a very successful famous cover version released by another band or artist. I can then show you both versions and you let me know which one you prefer!

In my honest, personal (subjective!) opinion, I’m going to give the award to the original this time (I actually gave it to the COVER the first time!). You could hear the angst, created by the story that inspired the song, in the way Stevie Nicks sang it and even in the guitar licks Lynsey Buckingham responded with (the song was inspired by the two’s long-term relationship breaking up)…

In comparison, while I loved The Corrs use of traditional Irish instruments like pennywhistle, fiddle and bodhran, unfortunately the beat sounds like a typical computer-made backbeat. Unfortunately, this kills some of the emotion and humanity for me…

Today I would like to tackle “Working Class Hero” originally by John Lennon (after he left the Beatles and made solo music). This is a fantastic song – it has a very simple chord structure, but I find this allows me to really connect to the lyrics about how hard and unfair the world is… Here is the original:

In 2009, the rock band Green Day, who are pretty famous for songs with political commentary (think American Idiot), decided to tackle a cover of this great song. Here is their interpretation of it, complete with an opening edit of interviews from survivors of the conflict happening in Darfur, Sudan at the time:

Continuaremos con el tema que pensé durante las semanas 64 a 66 (y tal vez más allá), donde abordo algunas canciones que fueron lanzadas originalmente por un artista o banda, pero que también tienen una versión famosa y muy exitosa lanzada por otra banda o artista. ¡Entonces puedo mostrarte ambas versiones y tú me cuentas cuál prefieres!

En comparación, si bien me encantó el uso de instrumentos tradicionales irlandeses por parte de The Corrs como pennywhistle, fiddle y bodhran, desafortunadamente el ritmo suena como un típico backbeat hecho por computadora. Desafortunadamente, esto mata parte de la emoción y la humanidad para mí...
