Recently I got a cow here on the Gubba Homestead. Her name of course is MOO lol She’s a jersey cow, pregnant and due in September. This won't be her first baby but it will be the first birth here on the Gubba Homestead and that has me excited!
Over the last month and a half I’ve developed a bond with her and we got into a routine of morning milkings. Today marks the day of me milking her for a while. This is done so her body can get stronger and well prepared for the baby she is about to have. About a week or two after her baby is born is when I’ll slowly start to milk her again.
At first her baby will consume all of the milk. This initial phase is where she will produce a very special and nutritious milk that is essential to the newborn. After this the calf will be weaned off of milk with milk and gains and eventually start eating grasses and milk like their mother. The calf doesn’t need milk for as long as she produces it which is the phase used for human consumption.
I’m excited for all the growth here on the Gubba Homestead and I LIVE for it.
