La noche era una cortina de lluvia que cubría la ciudad.

Leonardo y Alicia, después de compartir una cena con amigos, optaron por el metro como medio de transporte. Era más económico y veloz que el taxi.

Entraron en el último vagón de la serpiente de metal, que apenas tenía ocupantes. Solo les acompañaban un anciano con aspecto extraño y una joven madre con su retoño.

El metro se deslizaba por las entrañas de la tierra, emitiendo sonidos y vibraciones. Leonardo y Alicia ocuparon un asiento doble, junto a la puerta. El cansancio y el aburrimiento les invadieron, así que buscaron distracción en sus teléfonos.

Alicia bostezó, consultó la hora y expresó que quedaba poco para llegar. Leonardo asintió con la cabeza, sin apartar la vista de su pantalla.

De pronto, el metro se detuvo en seco. Las luces se extinguieron y el silencio se hizo dueño del lugar.

Alicia sintió escalofrío. Leonardo trató de ver algo en la penumbra para saber si se trataba de una avería.

Un ruido metálico rompió el silencio. Era como si alguien hubiera abierto la cabina trasera. Luego, una voz distorsionada por el altavoz les dio que habían llegado al final de su viaje: la estación del de los muertos. Les pidió que desocuparan el vagón y siguieran las indicaciones.

La parejita se quedó perpleja. Jamás habían oído hablar de esa estación.

Leonardo intentó calmarse diciendo que debía ser una broma de mal gusto y decidió salir a investigar.

Se levantaron y se dirigieron a la puerta para salir al andén. Este era un escenario infernal. Unas luces rojas parpadeaban, creando un ambiente siniestro. Había carteles que les daban la bienvenida al infierno, les advertían que no había salida y les instaban a arrepentirse de sus pecados.

El suelo estaba manchado de sangre y lo peor de todo: había decenas de cadáveres colgando cuál péndulo.

Leonardo y Alicia retrocedieron aterrorizados. Quisieron regresar al vagón, pero la puerta se había cerrado tras ellos.

Alicia gritó con todas sus fuerzas, pero su voz se perdió en el silencio. Nadie respondió. Solo se oyó una risa malévola que resonó por toda la estación.

Entonces, se dieron cuenta de que el anciano y la joven también habían salido del vagón. Pero no eran lo que parecían.

El anciano se quitó el sombrero, revelando su verdadera forma: era un esqueleto vestido con un traje negro y una corbata roja. En su mano derecha llevaba una dalla afilada.

La joven dejó caer al bebé al suelo, donde se convirtió en una rata negra. Ella también cambió su aspecto: era una bruja con el cabello gris, la piel arrugada y los ojos amarillos. Se apoyaba de una vara con su mano izquierda
Los dos se acercaron lentamente a Leonardo y Alicia, sonriendo con malicia.

Se presentaron como los guardianes del inframundo. Habían venido a buscar sus almas y expresaron que no tuvieran miedo. Que sería rápido y doloroso.

Los chicos se abrazaron con fuerza, esperando lo inevitable. No podían creer lo que les estaba pasando. Solo habían tenido la mala suerte de subirse al vagón equivocado.
Era el día de los muertos.

Written version

The night was a curtain of rain that covered the city.

Leonardo and Alicia, after sharing a dinner with friends, opted for the subway as a means of transportation. It was cheaper and faster than the cab.

They entered the last carriage of the metal serpent, which had hardly any occupants. They were accompanied only by a strange-looking old man and a young mother with her offspring.

The subway slid through the bowels of the earth, emitting sounds and vibrations. Leonardo and Alicia took a double seat, next to the door. Tiredness and boredom overcame them, so they sought distraction on their phones.

Alicia yawned, checked the time and said that she was close to arriving. Leonardo nodded, without taking his eyes off his screen.

Suddenly, the subway came to a screeching halt. The lights were extinguished and silence took over the place.

Alicia felt a shiver. Leonardo tried to see something in the darkness to see if it was a malfunction.

A metallic noise broke the silence. It was as if someone had opened the rear cabin. Then a distorted voice over the loudspeaker told them that they had reached the end of their journey: the station of the dead. He asked them to vacate the carriage and follow the directions.

The couple was perplexed. They had never heard of this station.

Leonardo tried to calm himself by saying that it must be a bad joke and decided to go out to investigate.

They got up and headed for the door to go out onto the platform. This was a hellish scene. Red lights were flashing, creating an ominous atmosphere. There were signs welcoming them to hell, warning them that there was no way out and urging them to repent of their sins.

The floor was stained with blood and worst of all: there were dozens of corpses hanging like a pendulum.

Leonardo and Alicia recoiled in terror. They wanted to return to the carriage, but the door had closed behind them.

Alicia screamed at the top of her lungs, but her voice was lost in the silence. No one answered. Only a malevolent laughter was heard that echoed throughout the station.

Then, they noticed that the old man and the young woman had also left the carriage. But they were not what they seemed.

The old man took off his hat, revealing his true form: he was a skeleton dressed in a black suit and a red tie. In his right hand he carried a sharpened dagger.

The young woman dropped the baby on the ground, where it turned into a black rat. She also changed her appearance: she was a witch with gray hair, wrinkled skin and yellow eyes. She held on to a stick in her left hand.

The two slowly approached Leonardo and Alicia, smiling mischievously.

They introduced themselves as the guardians of the underworld. They had come for their souls and expressed that they should not be afraid. That it would be quick and painful.

The couple hugged each other tightly, waiting for the inevitable. They couldn't believe what was happening to them. They had just had the bad luck to get into the wrong car.

It was the day of the dead.
