Demonstrations: Do they get what they want?

I captured this video from my office window in Aba, Nigeria. This is a demonstration/Peace walk held by people supporting a political candidate. You can see how enthusiatic they are as they wave banners, sing and chant. Demonstrations like this have become common place in the society. The question is: Are demonstrations still effective?
