Criollísima - Cover Voz y Piano

Saludos a todos los amigos de hive, en este momento les traigo una canción llamada Criollísima que fue compuesta por Henry Martinez y Luis Laguna. Esta composición está hecha en un ritmo, que para los músicos venezolanos es un orgullo, ya que existen muy pocos géneros en el mundo que estén hechos en ese compás, se trata de un 5/8, y el género es conocido como merengue venezolano.

Greetings to all hive friends, right now I bring you a song called Criollísima that was composed by Henry Martinez and Luis Laguna. This composition is made in a rhythm, which for Venezuelan musicians is a pride, since there are very few genres in the world that are made in that beat, it is a 5/8, and the genre is known as Venezuelan merengue.

Antes de hablar lo que significa este tema para mí, hablaré un poco del merengue desde un punto de vista musical; los musicólogos que se han dedicado a estudiar la música venezolana, tienen bastante debates con respecto a este género, sobre si originalmente fue un 6/8 o un 5/8, yo creo bastante posible que en realidad haya sido un 6/8 que poseía una pequeña apurada al final, que lo hace parecer un 5/8; sin embargo, a mi concepto Luis Laguna es un compositor que se encargó de folklorizar el concepto de un 5/8 mucho más cuadrado, y aunque su origen tal vez no sea ese, ya para muchos músicos se ha formalizado la manera de tocarlo a 5 y en lo que me parece, es una evolución que ya ocurrió, obviamente respeto los que desean tocarlo a 6, o incluso algunos lo hacen a 2/4 que particularmente no me gusta, pero para no debatir con respecto al tema con los conocedores, prefiero decir que en Venezuela existen varias formas de tocar el merengue venezolano (que valga la redundancia, ya que el merengue existe en otros países también).

Before talking about what this topic means to me, I will talk a bit about merengue from a musical point of view; musicologists who have dedicated themselves to studying Venezuelan music, have a lot of debates regarding this genre, about whether it was originally a 6/8 or a 5/8, I think it is quite possible that it was actually a 6/8 that it had a little rush at the end, which makes it look like a 5/8; however, in my opinion, Luis Laguna is a composer who took it upon himself to folklorize the concept of a much squarer 5/8, and although its origin may not be that, for many musicians the way of playing it in 5 has been formalized. and in what seems to me, it is an evolution that has already happened, obviously I respect those who want to play it at 6, or even some do it at 2/4 which I don't particularly like, but in order not to debate the subject with connoisseurs, I prefer to say that in Venezuela there are several ways to play the Venezuelan merengue (forgive the redundancy, since the merengue exists in other countries as well).

Ahora si hablemos desde un punto de vista más personal; yo empecé a tocar piano cuando tenía 14 años, y fui iniciado en una escuela de música. Cuando tenía aproximadamente 2 años estudiando, fui conectándome cada vez más con la música no académica o música popular, la cual, mucha de ella, carece de partituras, y mucho menos de metodología para aprender a ejecutarla. Este merengue venezolano fue el primero que aprendí, y fue porque conocí a varios compañeros músicos que me invitaron a formar parte de un grupo experimental de música venezolana, ya para este punto, ya conocía varios géneros populares como la salsa, merengue dominicano, cumbia, entre otros.

Now if we talk from a more personal point of view; I started playing piano when I was 14 years old, and I was initiated in a music school. When I was about 2 years old studying, I was connecting more and more with non-academic music or popular music, which, much of it, lacks scores, much less the methodology to learn how to play it. This Venezuelan merengue was the first I learned, and it was because I met several fellow musicians who invited me to be part of an experimental Venezuelan music group, by this point, I already knew several popular genres such as salsa, Dominican merengue, cumbia, among others.

A pesar de que poseía una pequeña, pero significativa experiencia en la música popular, cuando me encontré con este género, fue como volver a empezar, en realidad me costó demasiado poder digerir lo que me estaba enfrentando, no solo eso, además, por no poseer internet con la facilidad actual para dicha época, no encontraba una referencia pianistica que me ayudara a resolver audiblemente como ejecutar el merengue a 5/8; tuve que estudiarlo mucho para poder internalizarlo, e inventarme unos patrones rítmicos que concordaran con el género; en el video actual, debido a que estoy incluyendo la voz, que es un elemento que no domino, no hago casi patrones que suenen a merengue, más bien estoy ejecuntando un 5/8 o poco arpegeado, además, por ahí cambié dos palabritas a la letra original, debido a los nervios, pero bueno de igual modo espero les guste la interpretación.

Even though I had a small but significant experience in popular music, when I came across this genre, it was like starting all over again, actually it took me too long to digest what I was facing, not only that, also, for not having internet with the current ease for that time, I couldn't find a pianistic reference that would help me audibly solve how to execute the merengue at 5/8; I had to study it a lot to be able to internalize it, and invent some rhythmic patterns that agreed with the genre; In the current video, due to the fact that I am including the voice, which is an element that I do not dominate, I do not almost make patterns that sound like merengue, rather I am executing a 5/8 or a little arpegge, also, around there I changed two little words to the original lyrics, due to nerves, but anyway I hope you like the interpretation.
