We are back on the stage of the Hive Music Festival for its 41st week, round 2. Today, my song is comes from one of my favorite genres of traditional music. It's from the Brazilian folk music genre known as Choro.

When I started playing Mandolin, I got a lot of recommendations about listening to these Brazilian mandolin players. They don't disappoint. And in essence their goings in music are very similar to our folk musicians in Venezuela. You'll often listen to someone playing and recording some songs that aren't his own. But then, you'll find out the song is so popular that is has hundreds of versions, each adding a new layer of musical depth to the mix. It is a wonderful thing.

The first version I listened to from this songs was by the recordings of Jacob Bittercourt, best known as Jacob do Bandolim. This Brazilian mandolinist did a lot of recordings for their traditional music and also composed a lot of interesting pieces. But the song I'm bringing is from other composer known as Pixiguinha. The song is called Lamentos. And it a jewel of instrumental music having lots of variations on the main theme and other sections. Here's the one I used to listen to a lot.

Anyways, there's only so much I can do as a soloist of my level. So, here's a simplified version as my cover. I hope you enjoy it. It took me like 100 attempts to record it for the simple reason I get too distracted on the melody and started singing it or just lost all concentration and had to start over.

I still can't believe I'm recording Choros. These have a complex harmony and they're tough pieces to digest. But learning how to play is a rewarding experience all the same.

Estamos de regreso en el Hive Music Festival para la semana 41, ronda 2. En esta oportunidad, les traigo una pieza de uno de mis géneros favoritos de música tradicional. Hablo del Choro brasileiro.

Cuando empecé a tocar mandolina, me recomendaron mucho escuchar a los músico brasileiros. En especial a los mandolinistas y la verdad es que no decepcionan. En esencia, mucho de lo que hacen se parece a nuestros músicos tradicionales. Siempre se escuchan grabaciones de otros autores. Pero luego te das cuenta que esto ocurre porque las caciones son tan populares que cada quien decide agregarle alguna vuelta diferente y todos influyen en la riqueza musical del ámbito.

La primera vez que escuché esta canción fue una grabación de Jacob Bittercourt, mejor conocido como Jacob do Bandolim. Este mandolinista brasileiro grabó mucho música tradicional, entre ellas hay muchas de sus propias composiciones. Aunque, la cación que les traigo en esta ocasión es de otro compositor llamado Pixiguinha. El título de la misma es Lamentos. Es una joya de la música instrumental con todas sus variaciones sobre los temas y otras secciones. Aqui les dejo una versión que me gusta mucho.

De cualquier manera, hice todo lo posible como solista para hacer una versión simplificada del tema. Espero que la disfruten. Me tomó como 100 intentos grabar esta pieza porque me distraía mucho con la melodía y empezaba a cantar. Ahí se me iba toda la concentración y tenía que volver a grabar.

Todavía no me creo que esté grabando Choros. Estos son bien complejos en armonías y generalmente, son piezas difíciles de digerir. Pero aprender a tocar alguno es una experience gratificante.
