We are back on the stage of the Hive Music Festival for its 39th week, round 3. I wanted to end on a slower song since I already did my fair share of fast-playing during the previous rounds. I revisited a song I played a while ago, but never published on Hive.

I think it's the most versioned Traditional Venezuelan song. Truth be told, this piece wasn't well-known when it came out. Actually, it took a long time before it was even recorded for the first time. And I guess you wouldn't guess I'm talking about Caballo Viejo by Simón Díaz. Nowadays, this song has reached a level of popularity that international singers have taken it and sung it in different styles. I would mention one of my favorite version which is in the salsa genre and it's performed by no other than Gilberto Santa Rosa.

Nonetheless, I stuck with the traditional style and wanted to play my own version combining strums and fingerpicking. Thus, this cover came to be. The song is a reminder of how life doesn't offer second chances for anything. Time goes by and we can't stay idle. After this life, there's no other chance. The song is in a time signature of 3/4 and goes over a minor key all the time. It genre is something called Pasaje Llanero which is a weird way of calling things that sound like waltzes, but aren't. Pasajes tend to be pieces that tell stories or ponder upon some universal truths. I guess that's the difference. But it's open to discussion.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did studying it and recording it. It wasn't a 100 attempts to get this one right and the editing process went on smoothly.

Estamos de regreso para la semana 39, ronda 3, del Hive Music Festival. Quise terminar mi participación en esta edición con una canción más lenta ya que todo lo rápido lo hice en las rondas anteriores. Así que revisité un tema que llegué a grabar una vez, pero que no publiqué en Hive.

Creo que debe ser la canción más versionada del repertorio tradicional venezolano. Como una anécdota que aprendí de conciertos didácticos, esta canción no era muy conocida cuando se compuso. Pasaron años para que se grabara por primera vez. Y estoy seguro que nunca adivinarían que Caballo Viejo de Simín Díaz no era una canción muy popular. Hoy día, es tan popular que se han hecho varias versiones de la voz de artistas internacionales. Una de mis favoritas es la versión salsa que canta Gilberto Santa Rosa.

No obstante, me quedé en el género tradicional. Aquí hice mi versión con elementos del rasgueo y punteo. Así nació el video que van a ver. Esta canción es un recordatorio de que no hay segundas oportunidades en la vida. El tiempo pasa y si no hacemos nada, no lo podemos recuperar. Después de esta vida, no hay otra oportunidad. La pieza está en un tiempo de 3/4 y se desarrolla en tono menor sin ninguna modulación. El género es esa rareza rítmica conocida como Pasaje Llanero. Algo que parece un vals, pero no lo es. Los Pasajes cuentan historias o reflexionan sobre temas de la cultura universal. Quizá ahí está la diferencia. Aunque eso está abierto a discusión.

Espero que disfruten el tema tanto como lo hice mientras estudiaba y lo grababa. Esta vez no me tomó 100 intentos completar la grabación y la edición fue muy sencilla.
