When my family went to live in Germany in 1969, we first came to an apartment that was very close to the wall. It was a very large, modern residential complex on Köpenicker Straße. We had very good friends there, among them one with whom we re-established contact 50 years later, our dear friend and neighbor Roland.

When I wrote my post A Berliner-fight I found on Google Maps, something I shared at the end of that post, a link that allowed a 360° image tour of the city and so I could go from my school to the two apartments we lived in that city.

That made me very nostalgic and I told Roland about it. Since then he has been making videos of the city and the places I lived. A few days ago he sent me the tour of our first house and also went inside the building, which brought back a lot of memories. In this post I share a couple of them, thank you Roland for letting me experience this again!

I took the opportunity to include in the video the biggest radio hit of that time: Wie ein Stern, sung by the idol Frank Schöbel.

    English version

The wonderful journey that began on Tuesday, May 13, 1969, with the departure from the international airport of Maiquetía, in Venezuela, took almost two months, between Paris and London, to end in the capital of the (then) German Democratic Republic, Berlin, where we went to live.

We lived in Köpenicker Straße, a modern and large building that stood out in a city that even 24 years after the end of the war, showed a lot of ruins as a result of it. It was located to the south and parallel to the river that runs through Berlin, the Spree, and to the north, a few meters away, from the wall that divided the city into two different nations. So the back view of our house was West Berlin.

My ninth birthday was already in that city and my adaptation was so fast, as only a child of that age can do. As soon as we arrived we entered a school summer camp, where my sister and I only spoke Spanish and the others only German.

But between that camp, the classes that started early and a park at the back of the building, where I quickly made friends and also as children we took over the inner corridors of the building, the language became almost my mother tongue in a very short time.

Invierno en el parque / Winter in the Park

10 years old. That time when you enter in conflict with yourself, feeling attraction for girls, but at the same time, you run away from them and reject them. Even if you thought a girl was cute, you were denied any possibility of getting close to her.

Our group of friends did not discriminate, we still had coed soccer teams, we had snowball fights on equal terms, and there was no prerogative for girls in any game. Playing hide-and-seek was wonderful in the building, because the huge corridors that connected the whole building, with their respective staircases each, made the task of searching a lot of fun.

The countdown: 10, 9, 8... and everybody run! I ran to the end of the hallway, opened the door to the stairs and jumped down to the basement, the place where the storage rooms of each apartment were, where they kept the winter equipment during the summer, such as skis, ice skates and lots and lots of canned food. The light in the corridors has a timer that turns them off after a few minutes and as soon as it was turned off I felt that there was someone else there and at my reaction she said in a quiet voice, "Quiet Ylich, it's me", one of the female playmates. Finding us there made us laugh and we laughed quietly so as not to be discovered. As a most natural action we held hands and stayed like that for a few minutes. With the sight that adapts to the darkness, I could see her face very close to mine and so we smiled at each other, with a sweet, innocent and childish smile and with that same spirit we approached and joined our lips. Just a few seconds of that contact that produced a tingling that I never knew in my knees and that remained stored in my memory for the rest of my days.

Someone pressed the light button and we took the opportunity to run again and change hiding places, and so we each went our separate ways.

The experience in the basement did not change my interests at all and I was still constantly faced with the dilemma of a boy of that age. But growing up also had its impact on girls, who are always much more determined and assertive about such things.

In the park behind the building there was a nice elephant-slide on a sandbox that was the play area during the summer. Often when I was there, Marion, a girl a little older than me, maybe 12 or 13, would pick on me, but in a nice way. We didn't have any close calls, but she would always tease me or have something to do with me.

That summer I had seen her several times in the company of another girl, about the same age, but we hadn't talked.

I am sitting alone in the park and they both come up to me and tell me that they have a very serious problem and that they need me to solve it. To my surprise they tell me that they prefer that we go a little further away from there, so that no one will see us.

Intrigue was killing me, I couldn't imagine what it was all about. Marion introduced me to Connie, who turned out to be her cousin who lived in another city and was home for the vacations. So we walked to get away from the park until one of them told me in a forceful way:

-We are both in love with you and we want to be your girlfriend!
-But what should I do?" I asked them in my surprise at such a statement.
    -Well, you have to choose!

A shock of sensations went through my mind and body, it was nice, but I was terrified of having to choose one, not because of "choosing", but because of the terror of being with a girl. The experience of the first kiss had been nice, but ephemeral. Now a courtship was on the horizon.

We were just kids learning to know our feelings, but at that moment, at eleven years old, it was a transcendental decision. So I told them that I couldn't choose, that they were both very pretty and nice and I couldn't make a decision.

As neither of them was willing to give up in favor of the other and as I was not going to choose one, we agreed that the decision would be made with a sports competition!!! Yes, we were children!

I can no longer remember the number of tests that were carried out, there was long jump, high jump, short distance running, gymnastics... But the effort and determination of each one was so great, that they always ended up tying the score!

Finally the decision fell to me again. Since the love Olympics had not produced a winner, the two athletes, completely exhausted and sweaty, asked me to make the final decision.

My nerves got the better of me and I could not find what to do, because the fear of having a girlfriend was greater than that beautiful display of affection and sporting devotion.

So I made an analysis as deep as possible, considering the points in favor of my neighbor Marion and the points of Connie, the girl from the interior. So I very opportunely chose Connie, because after all she would only be in Berlin for a couple of days.

A couple of walks holding hands, a kiss, a goodbye and I went back to the park to continue playing with the other kids!
