    El Muñeco de la Ciudad

    Poster.jpg

    In the 40's and 50's the Venezuelan Merengue made its way into the repertoire of the dance orchestras and became socially accepted. For that reason it began to be played by the national orchestras. But it was not limited to Venezuelan lands and that is how several orchestras from other countries included some merengues in their repertoire. Possibly the most notorious and remembered case was "El muñeco de la ciudad", a merengue by Adrián Pérez, which was recorded by the Sonora Matancera, in 1956, in the voice of Nelson Pinedo.

    The version of this group respected the rhythm of Venezuelan merengue, however, the song was so popular in the Caribbean music scene that soon there were countless versions with other rhythms.

    This song is one of the standards of cañonera music and one of the most popular merengues in Venezuela, a taste that surely came to be reinforced by the great acceptance in other regions.

    With a very personal version, but keeping the merengue rhythm, I bring you El Muñeco de la Ciudad, as my participation for the Hive Open Mic, week 51.

    Lyrics | Letra

    La gente dice que soy
    El muñeco de la ciudad
    Porque soy negro, negrito
    Con la bemba colorá

    * Negro que baila caliente
    Negro que suena el tambor
    Negro que toca el cumaco
    Con ritmo en el corazón

    Todos se acercan a verme
    Por la gracia que yo tengo
    Al golpe de la tambora
    Yo les bailo este merengue

    * Negro que baila caliente...

    Si negro nací, nací
    Porque así lo quiso Dios
    Lo invito para que baile
    Así como bailo yo

    * Negro que baila caliente...
