This week the Hive Open Mic call proposes to focus our interpretation on the theme "grateful heart". When thinking about this theme, I who am fully involved in my salsa project, I could only think of the gratitude that all lovers of this genre have with Cuba, which is the cradle where all this inspiration was born. Although nowadays salsa is nourished by many other elements, Cuban music has all the essence and that is why all the lovers of this music return again and again to those roots.

The song I present to you today is by one of the most outstanding Cuban musicians, Compay Segundo, who was part, among many other groups, of the Buena Vista Social Club and as such, was one of the protagonists of the film of the same name by the German director Wim Wenders.

This song, although composed in 1984, has all the essence and flavor of the traditional son and that is why its impact on the world was immediate.

So the equation was simple, me, who wants to show the music that is the basis of salsa, of Caribbean music, as well as part of that repertoire; the request to speak from a grateful heart and the desire to interpret songs that I have never sung before.... These elements came together and here is my version of Chan chan, with a verse added by me, as my participation for the Hive Open Mic, in its 147th week, with the best desire to always support these Hive initiatives.

Esta semana la convocatoria del Hive Open Mic propone centrar nuestra interpretación en el tema "corazón agradecido". Al pensar en estema, yo que estoy metido de lleno en mi proyecto de salsa, solo pude pensar en el agradecimiento que tenemos todos los amantes de ese género con Cuba, que es la cuna donde nace toda esta inspiración. Aunque hoy en día la salsa se nutre de muchos otros elementos, en la música cubana está toda la esencia y por eso todos los amantes de esta música volvemos una y otra vez a esas raíces.

El tema que les presento hoy es de uno de los más destacados músicos cubanos, Compay Segundo, quien formó parte, entre muchas otras agrupaciones, del Buena Vista Social Club y como tal, fue uno de los protagonistas de la película homónima del director alemán Wim Wenders.

Esta canción, aunque fue compuesta en 1984, tiene toda la esencia y el sabor del son tradicional y por eso su impacto en el mundo fue inmediato.

Así que la ecuación fue sencilla, yo, que quiero mostrar la música que es la base de la salsa, de la música caribeña, así como parte de ese repertorio; la solicitud de hablar desde un corazón agradecido y el deseo de interpretar canciones que nunca antes he cantado... Se juntaron estos elemento y aquí está mi versión de Chan chan, con una estrofa agregada por mí, como mi participación para el Hive Open Mic, en su semana 147, con el mejor deseo de apoyar siempre estas iniciativas de Hive.
