Those who have dabbled in the arts are usually aware of the connection between sports and art, especially the performing and musical arts, which constantly resort to sports in order to develop the physical abilities of the actor, dancer, musician, singer, or whatever. Apart from the fact that sometimes it is sport that draws on the arts, as in the case of gymnastics, figure skating, and others.

But there is another area that is also fundamental in sports and in art, something that we all do permanently, but that we usually do badly after we stop being children: breathing.

When we see small children lying down breathing, we can see that the only thing that moves when inhaling and exhaling is their tummy, which constantly rises and falls. This is called diaphragmatic breathing since it is done with the diaphragm muscles. Besides being the most natural and best way for the human being, it has another quality, it can be strengthened by working it.

Athletes know very well the importance of this for the performance in their practices. This is precisely the other reason why art is supported by sports. Disciplines such as swimming, athletics, cycling, among many others, are an obligatory part of many artists' careers.

In music, in particular, those who play wind instruments, such as the trumpet, trombone, bassoon, oboe, etc., need to develop and strengthen these skills. And others who support their technique in breathing are singers.

The teacher with whom I am developing my vocal part, Alfredo Abreu, understands the preparation of the singer, more as a training, than as a class. And his sessions are really that, a training, which includes vocal technique together with physical conditioning.

This Saturday we had a special training day and I share part of it in the video I prepared of this activity.

This is one more proof that the art of singing is all an art...!
