A warm greeting to everyone in this beautiful global community. For Hive Open Mic Week #234, we are exploring the theme: “Autumn Feelings”. I am pleased to share my trumpet interpretation of “Autumn Leaves”, a jazz standard composed by Joseph Kosma in 1945. “Les Feuilles Mortes” is the original French version, with lyrics by Jacques Prévert, and in English by Johnny Mercer. The melodic line is simple, but with an indescribable beauty, with moderate intervallic leaps and repetition of motifs. In my case, I perform it in the key of A major, with some variations to the minor key. The piece is written in duple time (2/4), which gives it a regular and fluid rhythm. The tempo is moderate and with a syncopated rhythmic pattern. I have had the opportunity to listen to different versions, among which I would like to highlight Nat King Cole, Miles Davis, and Frank Sinatra. Chet Baker's version on Bossa Nova is lovely.

The lyrics speak of a lost love, and use autumn as a metaphor. The leaves that fall in autumn symbolize the end of something beautiful, like the fading of a love. Each verse conveys nostalgia, melancholy, and the feeling of walking along paths where happy moments were once shared. Life is full of changes and losses, which cause us sadness and longing. Whenever I talk to my parents, they always tell me about my aunt Sonia, who died of cancer. Her departure to another plane has been insurmountable for them. In my case, I have decided to believe that she is like the autumn leaves, she has been planted to be reborn in the memories of her family, in the eyes of her son, and in the hope of meeting again. In the perspective of God's plan, life does not end when we die, and that fills me with joy and peace.

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold
Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall
The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold
Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall
