    About :

Welcome to my music blog, today I am sharing a song with the trumpet from the group Train entitled «Hey, Soul Sister». This piece was released in 2009 and is a mix of folk rock and root rock. It was written in by Patrick Monahan, Amund Bjørklund and Espen Lind. The original key is in E major, in my case, it is one tone above, that is to say in F Sharp Major. The challenge of playing this song is that it has 6 sharps. You have to configure your brain and muscle memory to articulate a different pattern. One of the patterns that I love is the Ukulele pattern. This instrument is similar to the Venezuelan Cuatro, but with a different tuning. One of the players of this instrument that I love to listen to is Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Listening to this instrument, it is not difficult to connect with the Hawaiian Islands, Tahiti, and the Pacific Islands. This song tells us about love and the concept of a soul mate. Which I consider fiction, and does not exist. Finding true love requires effort, sacrifice, and courage.

Before reading a score, you must identify the key, time and speed, and structure of the song. Also some figures of the notes and repetitive patterns. To play this song, I was wondering which sharps I had to include in my mind. It was like she was making a recipe for a cake. You always have to visualize each note. Fingering with the ring finger on the trumpet has a level of difficulty similar to that on the piano. By having so many sharps, several notes are played with valves two and three, such as D Sharp, and G Sharp. The C Sharp (Treble Clef) found on the first additional line of the staff, is played on all three valves, as opposed to the C Sharp, found on the third space, which is played on valves 1 and 2, although in this case it can also be played with the three pistons. The same happens with the 2-line natural G, it is played without valves, but it is also played with valves 1 and 3. It is what are known as enharmonic notes, they have different configurations or positions, but they sound the same. Something that helped me with the rhythmic schemes was listening to the original song, to observe and listen if I was doing it well. I hope you enjoy my interpretation, soon I will share a didactic video about the trumpet.

    Hey, Soul Sister

    Hey, hey
    Hey, hey, hey, hey
    Hey, hey, hey, hey

    Your lipstick stains
On the front lobe of my left side brains
    I knew I wouldn't forget you
And so I went and let you blow my mind

    Your sweet moonbeam
The smell of you in every single dream I dream
    I knew when we collided
You're the one I had decided who's one of my kind

    Hey, soul sister
Ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo
The way you move ain't fair you know
    Hey, soul sister
I don't wanna miss a single thing you do tonight

    Hey, hey
    Hey, hey, hey, hey
    Hey, hey, hey, hey

    Just in time
I'm so glad you have a one-track mind like me
    You gave my life direction
A game show love connection we can't deny

    I'm so obsessed
My heart is bound to beat right out of my untrimmed chest
I believe in you, like a virgin you're madonna
And I'm always gonna wanna blow your mind

    Hey, soul sister
Ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo
The way you move ain't fair you know
    Hey, soul sister
I don't wanna miss a single thing you do tonight

The way you can cut a rug
Watching you is the only drug I need
    So, gangsta, I'm so thug
You're the only one I'm dreaming of
You see, I can be myself now finally
    In fact, there's nothing I can't be
I want the world to see
    You'll be with me

    Hey, soul sister
Ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo
The way you move ain't fair you know
    Hey, soul sister
I don't wanna miss a single thing you do tonight
    Hey, soul sister
I don't wanna miss a single thing you do tonight

    Hey, hey
    Hey, hey, hey, hey
    Hey, hey, hey, hey
    Tonight

    Hey, hey
    Hey, hey, hey, hey
    Hey, hey, hey, hey
    Tonight
