Hello everyone. I hope you are all well and having a great weekend. I am pleased to share my trumpet performance of “Vincent”, a beautiful ballad composed by Don McLean. This piece of music is a tribute to the post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. The song’s beginning refers to one of my favorite paintings: “The Starry Night”. The lyrics express in words the painter’s lonely and somewhat delusional life, his genius, and his lack of recognition while he was alive. The instrumentation is minimalist, with the acoustic guitar creating an intimate and subtle atmosphere. The key is evidently minor, and conveys a feeling of melancholy and introspection. The tempo is moderate, with a constant and regular rhythm. This song has a melodic bridge that connects the verses to the chorus, and I want to highlight a slight variation in harmony and melody, which creates a point of tension and release.

I love the relationship between painting and music. Both arts have the power to transmit emotions, tell stories, and create a magical scene. I have had the opportunity to visit museums and art exhibitions where the visible world merges with the invisible. It is incredible the different emotions that both arts express. Colors, textures, and shapes are like sounds that reach the heart and mind. A fundamental element is rhythm, and in music it manifests itself in the succession of sounds and silences. Composition is the manifestation of the different forms and expressions of our external world. Many times, when we compose, we base ourselves on images, dreams, and lived experiences. I really like those songs and paintings that tell stories and speak of who we are.

    Vincent

    Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and grey
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
    Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

    Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
    Perhaps they'll listen now

    Starry, starry night
    Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
    Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of China blue
    Colors changing hue
    Morning fields of amber grain
    Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

    Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
    Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight
    On that starry, starry night
You took your life, as lovers often do
But I could have told you, Vincent
This world was never meant for one
    As beautiful as you

    Starry, starry night
    Portraits hung in empty halls
    Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn, a bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

    Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they're not listening still
    Perhaps they never will
