Recognizing if one is in tune or not is a great challenge, and more so if you do not have some instruments available to recognize it. I remember that as soon as I started my musical language classes, some teachers recommended that I buy a tuning fork, a device that when hit, its vibration gives a particular note, the most recommended is A 440 MHz, these come calibrated. A classmate bought one in another tone, but the seller did not give her the one that the Master had specified. However, to everyone's surprise, it was useful. Then I discovered over time that there were electronic and digital devices that told you if you were in tune. With the advancement of technology, we have mobile applications that work as tuners. I don't know if they are as reliable as the tuning fork, but it's a great technological advance and saves a lot of money. If you have any experience with tuning apps you can share it in the comments.
Over time I have learned that one way to be in tune is to train auditorily, perhaps you will notice that some people come with exceptional talent, and other people have to fight freehand, to train both the ear and the voice. My trumpet and harmony teacher had an amazing pitch, I think it was a perfect pitch. He could tell from far away if someone was playing the wrong note. Several times he came to me and told me "That's not it, the correct note is...". You can imagine my surprise, how could I know if he is not looking at the sheet music? Of course, today I understand that he was a person who had a lot of listening experience because he had heard that lesson many times, he had even been there, and many of his students had played it. Once he told me that as a child they called him the king of solfeggio, imagine such a title. Over time I have been able to develop my ear, mainly through practice. One of the activities that I liked at the conservatory, and at the University, is melodic and rhythmic dictation, even both at the same time. It consisted of writing the notes and rhythms that they played with the piano on the staff. Fortunately, they repeated it up to 3 times.
One of the rhythms that I love is bachata, as soon as I hear one, I remember my childhood dancing with my aunts and cousins. In the 90s, this rhythm was heard a lot, which was a mixture between bolero and merengue. Today I bring you my interpretation with the trumpet of "Burbujas de Amor" by Master Juan Luis Guerra. Just naming him is remembering all those family gatherings listening to his music and his band 440. One detail I want to tell you about is that 440 is a reference to the standard musical tuning 440 MHz. The theme song is part of the Bachata Rosa album, and this one has very famous as La Bilirubina, Como Abeja al Panal, and others. The song was inspired while reading Julio Cortázar's book "Hopscotch" from 1963, in chapter 25, when he read that fish no longer touch the fish tank with their noses. That image stayed in his mind.
Tengo un corazón
Mutilado de esperanza y de razón
Tengo un corazón
Que madruga adonde quiera
Ay ay ay ay
Y ese corazón
Se desnuda de impaciencia ante tu voz
Pobre corazón
Que no atrapa su cordura
Quisiera ser un pez
Para tocar mi nariz en tu pecera
Y hacer burbujas de amor
Por donde quiera
Oh-oh-oh pasar la noche en vela
Mojado en ti
Un pez
Para bordar de corales tu cintura
Y hacer siluetas de amor
Bajo la luna
Oh-oh-oh saciar esta locura
Mojado en ti
Canta corazón
Con un ancla imprescindible de ilusión
Sueña corazón
No te nubles de amargura
Ay ay ay ay
Y este corazón
Se desnuda de impaciencia ante tu voz
Pobre corazón
Que no atrapa su cordura
Quisiera ser un pez
Para tocar mi nariz
En tu pecera
Y hacer burbujas de amor
Por donde quiera
Oh-oh-oh pasar la noche en vela
Mojado en ti
Un pez
Para bordar de corales tu cintura
Y hacer siluetas de amor
Bajo la luna
Oh-oh-oh saciar esta locura
Mojado en ti
Una noche
Para hundirnos hasta el fin
Cara a cara, beso a beso
Y vivir por siempre
Mojado en ti
Quisiera ser un pez
Para tocar mi nariz
En tu pecera
Y hacer burbujas de amor
Por donde quiera
Oh-oh-oh pasar la noche en vela
Mojado en ti
Un pez
Para bordar de cayenas tu cintura
Y hacer siluetas de amor
Bajo la luna
Oh-oh-oh saciar esta locura
Mojado en ti
Para tocar mi nariz
En tu pecera
Y hacer burbujas de amor
Por donde quiera
Oh-oh-oh pasar la noche en vela
Mojado en ti
Un pez
Para bordar de cayenas tu cintura
Y hacer siluetas de amor
Bajo la luna
Oh-oh-oh vaciar esta locura
Mojado en ti
