How can I improve my pitch when singing?
Tuning is essential in a musical performance. In my experience as a Music Teacher, tuning is precision to execute musical notes. It is as if you had a 30-centimeter ruler, and you had to point at an exact point on the line. Detuning would be missing the mark. One of the sports that can also show this aspect is throwing darts at a target, practice is required to hit the target. The best way to tune in is to learn to listen. I know that many people have limitations in their voice, and in their hearing, so it is advisable to see a specialist, a speech therapist, or an otorhinolaryngologist. I imagine a person who lives on an island isolated from the world and loves to sing with the fiction that he does it in tune, but he has to leave the island and finds little receptivity from the public. There is a movie that I recommend you watch, it's called Florence Foster Jenkins, it's a Biographical movie starring Meryl Streep. It will give you a lot of laughs, but it has an important message in terms of determination, confidence, and attitude.
To refine it you need to train, like any athlete, you should warm up before doing physical activity. I think a lot of singers miss this step and even have injuries to their vocal cords. I teach my students that before singing they should relax, and do diaphragmatic breathing exercises, they should also practice scales and intervals. Intervals are important, they should be practiced and listened to. Practicing them gives us security and precision. It happens a lot that you are singing low tones, and you have to make jumps to high tones and vice versa, and you have to hit the mark. Some songs have a lot of intervals, I recommend listening to those jumps that are more difficult several times before singing them. Surely you have noticed that in some cultures, or communities they are more in tune than others. That's because they are always in touch with the music. To tune in more, the best thing to do is listen to music with a diversity of notes and tonalities.
Today I want to share with you my interpretation of the trumpet of the song «Where Do I Begin? (Love Story)» composed by Francis Lai and lyrics by Carl Sigman. I remember watching the movie Love Story and playing this song many times in the Music School Orchestra. It wasn't until I saw the movie that I discovered the sad and melancholy character of the song. I even had the opportunity to sing the Spanish version several times.
Where do I begin
To tell the story of how great a love can be
The sweet love story that is older than the sea
The simple truth about the love she brings to me
Where do I start
With her first hello
She gave new meaning to this empty world of mine
There'd never be another love, another time
She came into my life and made the living fine
She fills my heart
She fills my heart with very special things
With angels' songs, with wild imaginings
She fills my soul with so much love
That anywhere I go I'm never lonely
With her around, who could be lonely
I reach for her hand, it's always there
How long does it last
Can love be measured by the hours in a day
I have no answers now but this much I can say
I know I'll need her 'til the stars all burn away
And she'll be there
How long does it last
Can love be measured by the hours in a day
I have no answers now but this much I can say
I know I'll need her 'til the stars all burn away
And she'll be there
