Todos necesitamos de un mentor. Cuando éramos niños aprendimos de nuestros padres, de nuestros maestros, de personas que conocimos en nuestra comunidad e incluso tuvimos amigos que nos guiaron y nos motivaron para tomar algunas decisiones cruciales en nuestra vida. Mi padre ha sido un excelente maestro, cuando estábamos niños nos enseñó a jugar ajedrez, a amar la historia y la lectura. Siempre cuando íbamos a un lugar histórico, nos contaba el contexto y la anécdota de ese lugar. Mi maestro de trompeta fue un gran mentor, porque no solo me enseño a leer, e interpretar partituras, también me educó sobre el negocio de la música, y también me formó para la vida. La humildad es la clave para aceptar consejos de aquellos que han vivido y conservan la experiencia. Uno no puede perder la oportunidad de ser mentor, cuando uno guía a alguien para que alcance sus sueños y su máximo potencial, uno también es un discípulo.

We all need a mentor. When we were children we learned from our parents, from our teachers, from people we met in our community and we even had friends who guided and motivated us to make some crucial decisions in our life. My father has been an excellent teacher, when we were children he taught us to play chess, to love history and reading. Whenever we went to a historical place, he would tell us the context and the anecdote of that place. My trumpet teacher was a great mentor because he not only taught me to read and interpret sheet music, but also educated me about the music business, and also trained me for life. Humility is the key to accepting advice from those who have lived and retain the experience. One cannot miss the opportunity to be a mentor, when one guides someone to reach their dreams and their full potential, one is also a disciple.

Yo he escuchado que nadie aprende por experiencia ajena. Sin embargo, es mejor aprender por amor que por dolor. Uno no puede andar por la vida siendo un experimento cuando ya otros han pasado por allí. Claro toca siempre investigar y validar los conocimientos con otras fuentes. Nadie tiene la verdad absoluta, y la decisión definitoria y final. Cuando alguien aprende fruto del amor, uno florece. Hay mentores positivos y negativos, unos pueden influir e impulsar y otros pueden desalentar y decirte que eso no se puede. Yo elijo la mejor parte, no me gusta estar con alguien que se queja todo el tiempo.

I've heard that no one learns from someone else's experience. However, it is better to learn for love than for pain. One cannot walk through life being an experiment when others have already been there. Of course, it is always time to investigate and validate the knowledge with other sources. Nobody has the absolute truth and the defining and final decision. When someone learns the fruit of love, one flourish. There are positive and negative mentors, some can influence and encourage and others can discourage and tell you that this cannot be done. I choose the best part, I don't like being with someone who complains all the time.
