Hello Open Mic!

For the theme Local Tradition, I'm singing a song by a Nigerian artiste, Chike, called 'Roju'. Roju is a combo of Romeo + Juliet, and it's a love song played especially at wedding ceremonies in Nigeria.

We have a lot of peculiar tribes in Nigeria, all traditions so different yet so similar. One way we're similar is how we conduct our traditional weddings. There are slight differences but it's mostly the same process.

This song Roju is about a groom raining praises on his beautiful bride as she is 'married off' to him. She dances and rolls her waist in the usual way a bride does to get the appraisal of her husband while he continues praising her and being thankful that he finally found the one.

It is done both in Ibo language and in English. I'm not Ibo and I can't speak the language so this was a bit of a tongue twister for me. I did my best though and I enjoyed singing it. It reminds me of my own traditional wedding. Coincidentally, this day happens to be the anniversary of my traditional wedding.

This wasn't the most exciting video to make because of the many constraints I had. I thought I wouldn't be able to come through this week but this is some last-minute wonder. I tried to make it presentable and I hope you like it.

Para el tema Tradición local, estoy cantando una canción de un artista nigeriano, Chike, llamada 'Roju'. Roju es una combinación de Romeo + Julieta, y es una canción de amor que se toca especialmente en las ceremonias de boda en Nigeria.

Tenemos muchas tribus peculiares en Nigeria, todas las tradiciones tan diferentes pero tan similares. Una forma en que somos similares es la forma en que llevamos a cabo nuestras bodas tradicionales. Hay ligeras diferencias, pero en su mayoría es el mismo proceso.

Esta canción, Roju, trata sobre un novio que elogia a su hermosa novia cuando se "casa" con él. Ella baila y gira su cintura de la manera habitual que hace una novia para obtener la apreciación de su esposo mientras él continúa elogiándola y agradeciendo que finalmente encontró a la indicada.

Se realiza tanto en lengua ibo como en inglés. No soy ibo y no puedo hablar el idioma, así que esto fue un trabalenguas para mí. Aunque hice lo mejor que pude y disfruté cantándola. Me recuerda a mi propia boda tradicional. Casualmente, este día es el aniversario de mi boda tradicional.

Este no fue el video más emocionante que hice debido a las muchas limitaciones que tuve. Pensé que no sería capaz de pasar esta semana, pero esto es una maravilla de última hora. Traté de hacerlo presentable y espero que les guste.
