The hierarchy of operations, also known as PEMDAS (an acronym for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction) or BEDMAS (an acronym used in other countries for Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction), is a set of rules used to determine the order in which mathematical operations should be performed in an expression.

This hierarchy of operations is important because it allows mathematical expressions to be evaluated consistently and unambiguously. Without it, different people might interpret the same expressions in different ways, leading to different and incorrect results.

The hierarchy of operations states that, in a mathematical expression, operations inside parentheses (or brackets or braces) should be performed first, followed by calculations involving exponents and roots, then multiplication and division (in the order they appear from left to right), and finally addition and subtraction (also in the order they appear from left to right).

Let's look at some examples to illustrate how the hierarchy of operations is applied:

    Example 1: 6 + 3 × 2

    We must first perform the multiplication: 3 × 2 = 6. Then we can add: 6 + 6 = 12. Therefore, the result is 12.

    Example 2: (10 − 2) ÷ (3 + 1) × 2

    We first solve the operations inside the parentheses: 10 − 2 = 8 and 3 + 1 = 4. Then we divide: 8 ÷ 4 = 2. Finally, we multiply by 2: 2 × 2 = 4. Therefore, the result is 4.

    Example 3: 3 + 4 × 2^2

    We first solve the exponent: 2^2 = 4. Then we multiply: 4 × 4 = 16. Finally, we add: 3 + 16 = 19. Therefore, the result is 19.

In summary, the hierarchy of operations is an important set of rules used to determine the order in which mathematical operations should be performed in an expression. By following these rules, we can evaluate mathematical expressions consistently and unambiguously.
