The Greek word stauros implies a stake or post. So, Jesus was nailed to a stauros or stake. He was nailed to a cross as several portions of the Bible say, including Philippians 2:8 and John 19:31.
The cross was made from a tree. He couldn't have been nailed on a concrete wall, but a tree. The two thieves were equally nailed alongside Jesus at Golgotha.
Going back to history, the Roman empire nailed criminals on a cross or tree.
It could be a stake or cross as the Bible implies. There's no contradiction. Even if you call it a post, it's all the same.
