Monday Drumday: New gear day!

Many musicians will know about GAS, which stands for Gear Acquisitions Syndrome. I have this feeling that drumming could be pretty bad in that department as you can keep adding to your kit with the justification that you will actually use more stuff whereas a guitarist can only play one guitar at a time.

My original plan was to find something to mount my electronic drum pad on that was more stable than the music stand I have been using. I thought I could get a proper snare drum stand and make a small table that could fit on top of it. I saw what was available on gear sites. A snare stand can cost anything from £20 to hundreds. I just wanted something reasonably stable. I also looked on ebay as I might find a second hand bargain these. What came up was this combination of a stand and a practice pad for less than some of the stands I had looked at, with free delivery.

The stand is by Mapex and I do not think it is their cheapest model. The Billy Hyde practice pad would cost a fair bit on its own. I had been thinking of getting one, so this package was irrestistable.

So far it seems good. It is all very stable in use with plenty of scope for adjustment. It looks like it could last a while. Drumming hardware is generally robust, as it needs to be given people will be hitting it. This is my first bit of serious drumming kit, so we shall see what it leads to.

I am finding plenty of educational material online to keep me busy. I do wonder if I should invest in a course to give my learning some structure, but with the limited gear I have I may not be able to practice all the techniques. Alternatively I could go to a teacher who would have the kit I could play on and then think about whether I want to get my own. I shall be documenting my progress on Hive, of course.

It would be great to see some other people in the Drums community.
