A few days ago I read Douglas Rushkoff's article Good Cops Don’t Need Grenade Launchers. So I was glad when I listened to yesterday's Team Human Podcast, his opening monologue was based on that article.
With whats going on in the collective consciousness of our society. Defund, Abolish or Reform the Cops. It was good to listen to Rushkoff's Insights on the subject. One main point in the article was the militarization of our police goes hand in hand with the collapse of civil society. And it really feels like that has been going on for a long time now. Calling guys with guns isn’t the best solution for most problems. When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like nails.
But as Douglas wrote "It’s easy to tell police to act more like civil servants, but they can only do so in the context of a greater civil society. They need the support of other civil servants — experts in drug abuse, domestic disputes, youth counseling, truancy, homelessness, and so on. By the time someone calls the cops for a problem, it is usually too late. You may as well be calling in the National Guard."
Lastly, it might be important now to think about this, "Civil servants can only exist in a civil society. And a civil society requires servants trained in civility."
I did the video and audio edit for this video. I have permission from Douglas Rushkoff himself to use his audio, much thanks to him. Check out the full podcast EP. 158 RICHARD METZGER “DO THEY OWE US A LIVING?”. Thanks for checking out my video!
