Sakura Blossoms Keep Falling On My Head

But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turning red....As the old song goes, a bit modified.

One of the most incredible Hanami (sakura viewing) spots in Tokyo is Kunitachi's Daigaku Dori(College street).

    Kunitachi2.jpg

Located just 30 minutes from Shinjuku by train it's a must see if you happen to be in Japan during hanami season.

Daigaku Dori is just over 2km long stretching from Yaho Station, south, to Kunitachi station, north. The entire route is lined with sakura trees and in spring becomes one of the most iconic hanami places in Tokyo.

Even the streets perpendicular to Daigaku Dori are lined with Sakura.

As you exit Yaho station the show begins immediately.

Needs a bit of landscaping. Honestly, everything grows so fast in Japan it's difficult to keep up with it all.

Moving along, this is the first intersection.

Sakura trees line the streets in all four directions. During peak seasons this intersection is lined with petals that fall off of the trees. It's really incredible to see in person.

The bridge where I took the video can be seen in the distance just past the tall mansion(apartment) building.

It must be wonderful to walk out onto your balcony in spring and see all of the pink trees below.

If you love flowers there are endless opportunities to get beautiful pictures of the blossoms.

It helps if the weather cooperates though.

The street parallel to the mansion building has a cool looking tree arching over it.

After a few minutes of walking from Yaho station you arrive at the only bridge crossing on the street.

    IMG_4178.jpg

The bridge offers unique views of the tree line. It's easy to spend half an hour on this bridge taking pictures.

    Looking north towards Kunitachi station.

On a sunny day the colors are much more vivid & awing.

As we continue on, this bright pink tree stood out from the others. It could have been an ume(plum) tree or just a different variation of sakura tree, I'm not sure though.

Someone parked their mint green car in front of a blossoming tree making for some nice color contrast.

Moving on towards the station was this European inspired building hosting a burger & craft beer shop.

    IMG_4196-1.jpg

Gourmet hamburgers and craft beers have been the rage around Tokyo for the past 5 years.

    IMG_4197.jpg

Before you know it you're almost at Kunitachi station.

    IMG_4198.jpg

Not to be outdone, the tulips begin to compete with the sakura trees fro admirers.

    IMG_4199.jpg

Kunitachi is still a small town and has a lot of charm that small towns have. It has changed a lot since I was an English teacher here 20 years ago though and appears to be growing fast.

    IMG_4205.jpg

No matter what though, the people who planted the trees gave it a charm that will last no matter how large the town grows.

And with that, I hope you enjoyed this walk amongst the sakura. If you happen to visit Kunitachi be on the lookout for the old "denwa" pay phone and Antique John's. Both are cool residents on Daigaku dori.

Because I'm free, nothing's worrying me...
