    About :

So with the big Steam sale going on it was time to do some shopping. After seeing my man @derangedvisions playing Far Cry 5 I decided to pick it up for $10. I haven't played a Far Cry game since Far Cry 4 released in 2014 so it was about time. I also picked up Far Cry 3 - Blood Dragon for $5.

I decided to record the first hour of the game to show off what it's like. That takes us through the prologue of the game that lays down the plot. I won't be doing a Let's Play of this, but I'll probably record some more videos to show off the games features once I've progressed in the game. I just want to chill and take it easy with this game as I go through it. I will however record a Let's Play of Blood Dragon seeing as it's so short.

    First Impressions

The game starts off with a pretty interesting cutscene. It depicts witness testimonies describing how Hope County gets taken over by Joseph Seed and his doomsday cult. I was amazed at the graphical quality of this cutscene. It looked really crisp.

Once the cutscene ends we get to see the first glimpse of gameplay footage and I gotta say that looks really crisp to. We're sat in a helicopter flying into Hope County with an arrest warrant for Joseph Seed. There's the typical tough guy U.S. Marshal who's all for the plan and then there's the terrified local sheriff who's trying to warn us that this is a bad idea.

As we land we walk through this village of sorts with all these local cult members. Every single one of them is wielding a weapon of sorts, be it a gun or a baseball bat. A premonition of things to come for sure.

We get our first glimpse of Joseph Seed in a church where he's holding a speech or a ceremony of some sorts. I immediately noticed that he had the seven deadly sins, not tattooed, but scarred into his skin. We cuff and parade him through the village back to the helicopter where things, of course, goes to shit. The cult members are throwing themselves at the helicopter and manages to crash it as it's taking off.

It's here, after waking up from the crash, that we get the firs real up close meeting with Joseph Seed. After an interesting monologue from this mad man we have to flee while being chased and shot at. This is so iconic to the Far Cry games I feel. There's always this prologue where we eventually get an up close meeting with the bad guy before having to flee from him. I like it when games stay true to their franchise.

    Gameplay Mechanics

I have to mention first that this game runs great. I'm running it on high graphics and I'm getting a smooth 55-60 FPS with the occasional small stutter. This is really complementary to the smooth gameplay mechanics.

Movement is really smooth and nice. It reminds me a little bit off the fast paced movement style of the Call of Duty games. You're fast to sprint, you can turn corners pretty fast and you can slide behind cover. There's also some decent jumping, climbing and vaulting mechanics.

The shooting is also really nice in this game. I'm really liking it. There's real bullets leaving the gun with some proper physics being applied. All of the different guns really feel different as well. There's a sweet compound bow that I really like and there's melee weapons that go bonk, as they should.

The driving mechanics are pretty simple but they do the job. There's quads, cars, helicopters and planes that can be used to traverse the huge map. Just taking off in a plane and parachuting or wingsuiting out of it to reach your destination is pretty handy to say the least.

    What is there to do?

The main goal of the game is of course to take down Joseph Seed and his lieutenants who also happen to be his family. There's a ton of main story missions to take on as well as a second ton of side missions.

In between that there's outposts to liberate from the cult, cult shrines to take down, cult transports to destroy, civilians to rescue from being held hostage, barrels of booze to dive for, fishing, hunting, challenges to be done and I could probably list a few more. Point is there's no lack of things to do. I rarely run a few hundred meters around the map without finding something to destroy or someone to rescue.

There's also something called an arcade mode that I haven't looked much into yet. From what I've gathered it seems to be community made content published through the map editor. All new campaigns and scenarios made and published by the community. I'll have to check that out later.

    Microtransactions

To my own big surprise I found out that Far Cry 5 has microtransactions. This surprised me quite a bit seeing as I thought Far Cry 5 was a single player game. There's apparently these silver bars that can be bought vie microtransactions that let's you "prestige" weapons, cars and other gear to unlock new skins for them.

Luckily you can "prestige" weapons with money you earn in-game as well but by buying silver you can do it faster. There's also some clothing items and stuff I've seen in the shops that can be bought only with silver. I hope no ones stupid enough to buy this crap. I know I'll be staying far away from it.

I'm having great fun with Far Cry 5. I'll enjoy playing through this one for sure. The game runs great, plays great and looks great. That's a recipe for success.
