    About :

In this episode we go through a bunch of stuff. After a very disappointing interaction and reward from the giant demon lord upstairs I decide to just kill him. He doesn't make it easy for me but I take him down in the end. In addition to the satisfaction of killing the hardest boss yet we get a whole bunch of information.

In reality this is a bit disappointing. We run through the whole game, slowly gathering tidbits of information until we reach about 40% only to get the remaining 60% from killing no more than two bosses. Seems like lazy game design to me when they suddenly just splurge out the rest.

No matter, we continue exploring and we end up finding the Author. The very being that has told us to collect all of this information. He's quite the imposing character and he gives us several choices. We can either surrender the data or refuse.

I saw no reason to refuse really and decided to just hand it over. He then just sucks the information out of us and the game ends. No last boss fight. No climax to end the game off. Just a cutscene and that's it. Extremely disappointing.

Minutes later we spawn back into the very start of the game where we get to see a new opening cutscene and some guy talking to us. Telling us to continue our journey and speak to the arcitects. The game is now in New Game+ where we get to play the game again in search of another ending. We keep all our gear but the world is reset. I was without words to say the least.

    Final Review

Albeit the ending that I got was a disappointing one I think Hellpoint is a good game. Not so good that I can be bothered to play it several times to get all the endings but one worth playing at least once. The lore surrounding the game is quite interesting.

As I've mentioned a hundred times during this playthrough it is a souls-like game which means it's heavily inspired by the Dark Souls game. Movement and combat feels very much like Dark Souls and that's definitely my favorite part of the game. Movement and combat is real slick.

I also like that they added another dimension of verticality that the Dark Souls games didn't have. In Dark Souls you can jump to get over ledges and stuff but you can't use it to climb. That was quite fun and let me to discover a lot of cool secrets and extra loot.

One thing I didn't like was the balance between difficulties. The base difficulty starts off fine but becomes quite easy early on. If you raise the difficulty it becomes stupid hard to the point where everything pretty much one shots you. This is the same issue I had with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

The game could also have done a better job of explaining certain mechanics. Especially those involving the black hole clock and the black hole doors. It was quite disappointing that I only learned about that at the very end of the game and that I learned about it by reading on the internet. This should have been explained in game so I could have explored the feature more.

And then there's the ending. I understand that had I made a different choice at the end I would probably have gotten a boss fight. But... why would then even make an ending that doesn't involve a boss fight in a game like this? There's different endings in Dark Souls as well but they will require you to fight the last boss before making the choice of an ending. Disappointing.

All in all this was a great experience for a game I got for free. I don't regret picking it up and I don't regret making a let's play series out of it. It fueled a sort of fire in me and I now find that creating video content for games is really fun.

Check out this game if you like souls-like games! It's one of the better ones I've played although it will never rise above Dark Souls.
