Insects are very vulnerable to predators, for centuries there has been a run in the techniques of escape and predation, to the point that insects have incredible defense mechanisms when they are in their most vulnerable states! In my post we are going to see an explanatory video of how a caterpillar defends itself, I will explain the science of stinging hairs! make yourself comfortable and enjoy my post!👨‍🏫🤯

We know from school that butterflies go through a growth process or life cycle called metamorphosis, that is, to reach its mature state the butterfly must develop its organelles through different phases, each phase has a different physiological and morphological growth than the others. ! at each stage the butterfly develops its organs according to its priorities! the problem is that these metamorphological phases give the butterfly a disadvantage, it does not have wings to escape from its predators! But then what do you do to protect yourself?💥

The butterfly understood that the larval stage is its weak point and during millions of years of evolution the larva acquired a very interesting defense mechanism that is very common in (DIPTEROS), extensions of the body or exoskeleton called stinging hairs! With this defensive mechanism, predators have much more work to feed on a caterpillar, in fact not all insectivore predators can capture a caterpillar without injuring themselves!😲😱

Well then, how could we define stinging hairs? It could be defined as extensions of the skin of caterpillars or other arthropods (arachnids) that fulfill a "defensive" function, these hairs seen under the magnifying glass are hollow, and inside they have a "toxin" that when the hair enters the predator's skin releases the toxin causing some very uncomfortable reactions in the animals!🔬😱

This practice must be done very carefully, we should never touch the animal directly with our bare hands, after finishing the work we clean all the utensils with great care and hot water! We do not want to accidentally bring a hair to our eye, returning to the topic, the arachnids are specialized when it comes to using their defensive system! remember that a spider is a predator, but in the Amazon rainforest it has other predators on top of it, and some species use stinging hairs to defend themselves but in this case they are thrown by the spiders' legs! I mean, it's a voluntary reaction when you feel threatened!😱👨‍💻

    img_20211118_122359.jpg

The main objective of the caterpillar is to complete its life cycle, since it is a transitory larval stage! To avoid defending themselves and having to use their hair, many butterfly larvae have many very bright colors that warn their predator that it is a dangerous animal! but this principle is not always respected since predators such as birds have feathers and a defensive system against the stinging hairs of the caterpillars, so for years there is competition from who attacks or defends themselves better! But to achieve even greater success and the caterpillars reach their adult stage, hundreds of eggs are laid, while a bird lays only 3 or 4 ... This is where the numerical advantage favors the butterfly!🦋🦋

If you look at the photos well, you can see that the caterpillar has teeth that look like they are cutters! and not grip? you know why? These mouthparts are called chewers and cutters and they help the caterpillar to cut the leaves since its diet is herbivorous! Trying to decipher the level of reaction and pain that a stinging hair causes us if we accidentally touch it varies in each species! there are species that have few such is the case of my caterpillar I think it may be a moth! and there are other caterpillars that have thousands of hairs so the amount of toxin that enters our skin is very different!🦋🐛😲

While studying the phases of the metamorphosis of the larva I saw how the pupa caught my attention because this is where the thread was produced in ancient times, we see how the larva lays eggs that are full of many "threads", these small pupae do not have any kind of defense then the "mother" wraps them up against her body to give her protection with her hairs!😀😀

We are going to put into practice what the theory says regarding the stinging hairs that are hollow, so if I use a higher magnification for example of 30x I should pass the light into the hair and see the details! we'll see...😁😀

    img_20211118_124533_1.jpg

Well exactly we see in the microscope what the theory tells us are hollow since if they were not, they would look dark, and I dare say that inside they have a "yellow" liquid that must be the toxin! amazing, right? something as simple as a hair can help a species complete its life cycle!😏😏
