Hoy les traigo esta canción que se a muchos nos gusta, un clásico de Metallica, la canción "One", del álbum “...And Justice for All” publicado en 1988.

Today I bring you this song that I know many of us love, a Metallica classic, the song "One", from the album "...And Justice for All", released in 1988.

El poder tocarla fue una de esas metas que me costó bastante trabajo lograr, principalmente por su solo, cuya parte inicial me llevó mucho tiempo dominar. Esta canción me trae muchos recuerdos, buenos y graciosos, los cuales relataré en este post. Lamentándolo mucho, no poseo fotos de estos eventos, no soy una persona de tomarse muchas fotos, pero me arrepiento de no haberlo hecho, hubiera querido enseñarles parte de lo que viví. Pero bueno, espero que igual sea de su agrado conocer este suceso.

Being able to play it was one of those goals that took me a lot of work to achieve, mainly because of its solo, whose initial part took me a long time to master. This song brings me many memories, good and fun, which I will relate in this post. I'm sorry, I don't have photos of these events, I'm not a person who takes a lot of photos, but I regret not having done it, I would have liked to show you part of what I experienced. But well, I hope you still like to know this event.

Hace casi tres años, en mi ciudad natal, Maracaibo, Venezuela, estaba yo enfrascado en terminar la universidad, por lo cual deje un poco de lado la guitarra para centrarme en mis estudios, cosa que le pasaría factura a la habilidad y precisión de mis manos más adelante.

Almost three years ago, in my hometown, Maracaibo, Venezuela, I was in the process of finishing college, so I left the guitar a little aside to focus on my studies, something that would not benefit me at all in the skill and precision of my hands later.

Entonces, mientras estudiaba, conocí a un amigo que estaba en una banda de Metalcore, y ambos nos comentábamos las bandas que nos gustaban, así como las canciones que nos sabíamos en la guitarra.

Then, while I was studying, I met a friend who was in a Metalcore band, and we both told each other about the bands we liked, as well as the songs we knew on guitar.

Luego de unos días, me notificó que habría una audición para la Orquesta Sinfónica de Rock del Estado Zulia (Zulia es el estado donde vivo), y me animó a participar, teniendo que aprender 5 canciones, detalladas a continuación.

A few days later, he told me that there would be an audition for the Zulia State Rock Symphony Orchestra (Zulia is the state where I live), and he encouraged me to participate, having to learn 5 songs, detailed below.

Canciones a aprender / Songs to learn.

• Somebody to Love – Queen.
• Going Under – Evanescence.
• Mother of Light – Epica.
• Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana.
• One – Metallica.

Estaba muy emocionado, nunca había hecho una audición; pertenecer a un grupo de música era algo que siempre quise, y bueno, estaba pautado para una semana y media después al día de haberme enterado, y desde allí empecé a practicar.

I was very excited, I had never auditioned before; belonging to a musical group was something I always wanted, and well, it was scheduled for a week and a half after the day I found out, and from there I started practicing.

Me aprendí las 5 canciones, enfocándome en "One", siendo esta la más dificil de todas. Y bueno, todos los días estaba unas 3 horas practicando para intentar tocar la canción correctamente, llegando al punto de molestar un poco en mi casa, ya que me gusta tocar con un volumen más alto del necesario jajaja.

I learned all the songs, focusing on One, being the most difficult of them all. And well, every day I was about 3 hours practicing to try to play the song correctly, getting to bother a little at home, since I like to play with a higher volume than necessary hahaha.

Los días pasaron y llegó la fecha del evento. Y pues, nunca fui una persona adinerada, así que desplazarme al sitio de la audición con mi guitarra y amplificador fue una complicación para mí, ya que no poseía vehículo, además de que en mi país Venezuela, desde hace varios años atrás, hasta el simple hecho de pagar un taxi es una complicación monetaria. Entonces, luego de tanto buscar cómo solucionar la ida, pude resolver con un amigo que poseía vehículo, pagándole por llevarme a mí y a mi hermano menor.

The days went by and the date of the event arrived. And well, I was never a wealthy person, so moving to the place of the audition with my guitar and amplifier was a complication for me, since I had no car, besides in my country Venezuela, for several years, even the simple fact of paying a cab is a monetary complication. So, after looking for a way to get there, I was able to find a way with a friend who had a car, paying him to take me and my younger brother.

Una vez en el sitio, me entraron los nervios, pero no deje que me frenaran, practiqué con la guitarra desconectada todo el tiempo en que esperaba mi turno, hasta que paso una situación muy graciosa… jajajajaj.

Once at the place, I got nervous, but I didn't let them stop me, I practiced with the guitar unplugged all the time I was waiting for my turn, until a very funny situation happened... hahahahaha.

Verán, debido a la universidad, mi guitarra estuvo guardada muchísimo tiempo, y las cuerdas deben cambiarse cada cierto periodo, cosa que no hice por descuidado y olvidadizo, y adivinen que sucedió…

You see, due to college, my guitar was in storage for a long time, and the strings must be changed every so often, which I didn't do because of carelessness and forgetfulness, and guess what happened?

Estaba practicando el solo de "One", a la espera de mi turno, y 30 minutos antes de que me tocara, se reventó la primera cuerda mientras hacia el primer gran bending (estirar la cuerda para llegar a notas más altas en el mismo traste pisado), y fue una complicación grandísima. No obstante, mi hermano se estaba riendo de mí, en plan buena onda, y no me quedo de otra más que reírme igual por ese inconveniente tan repentino. No se cómo mantuve la calma, pero lo hice, y, con muchísima pena, les pregunte a los otros participantes guitarristas si me podían prestar una cuerda de repuesto, pero nadie llevaba una consigo, y no tuve más remedio que pedir una guitarra para hacer la audición.

I was practicing the "One" solo, waiting for my turn, and 30 minutes before my turn, the first string broke while I was doing the first big bending (stretching the string to reach higher notes on the same fret), and it was a big complication. However, my brother was laughing at me, in a good-natured way, and I had no choice but to laugh anyway at such a sudden inconvenience. I don't know how I kept my cool, but I did, and, with much regret, I asked the other guitarists if I could borrow a spare string, but no one had one with them, and I had no choice but to ask for a guitar for the audition.

No fue fácil, amigos, jajajaja. La guitarra que llevé para allá, es la misma de este video, y la que me prestaron era una Stratocaster, es decir, la forma estándar. Y bueno, tuve que volver a practicar debido a que tenía que adaptarme a la posición en la que tenía que recostarla a mi pierna, pero luego de tanto esperar a que me tocara, pude acoplarme justo a tiempo para mi turno, y toqué lo mejor que pude, en conjunto con otros músicos que también hacían audiciones para bajista, baterista y cantante; y al fin, pude completarlas con éxito, viéndolo reflejado en la cara de aprobación de mi hermano menor.

It wasn't easy, folks, hahaha. The guitar I took there, is the same one that appears in this video, and the one they lent me was a Stratocaster, that is, the standard shape. And well, I had to practice again because I had to adapt to the position in which I had to rest it on my leg, but after so much waiting for my audition, I was able to adapt just in time for my turn, and I played the best I could, along with other musicians who were also auditioning for bassist, drummer and singer; and in the end, I was able to complete them successfully, seeing it reflected in my younger brother's approving face.

Una vez finalizada la audición, nos felicitaron a todos, y nos pidieron nuestros números telefónicos para contactarnos una vez quisieran convocarnos, y para mi desgracia, nunca me llamaron. Pensé que no me habían aceptado, que no fui lo suficientemente bueno, pasando así los días hasta que me olvide del asunto, aun así, me había quedado la linda experiencia.

Once the audition was over, they congratulated us all, and asked for our phone numbers so they could contact us whenever they wanted to call us, and to my misfortune, they never called me. I thought they hadn't accepted me, that I wasn't good enough, and so the days went by until I forgot about it, even so, I had been left with a nice experience.

Y fue así, hasta que en cierto día, me conseguí de nuevo a mi amigo, al mismo que me había dicho de la audición, y me preguntó el porqué de no haber ido a ningún ensayo luego de la audición.

And so it went, until one day, I had my friend back, the same one who had told me about the audition, and he asked me why I had not gone to any rehearsal after the audition.

Yo le comenté que nunca me llamaron, y el, todo extrañado, me dijo que a todos los que participaron los habían llamado, incluso a los que no lo hicieron tan bien, diciéndome también que le pareció muy raro el hecho de no llamarme, ya que me dijo que lo hice muy bien, comentando que hasta preguntaron por mí el día del primer ensayo, llamando a mi asistencia.

I told him that they never called me, and he was very surprised and told me that they had called everyone who participated, even those who did not do so well, also telling me that he thought it was very strange that they did not call me, since he said that I did very well, commenting that they even asked for me the day of the first rehearsal, calling my assistance.

Y entonces concluimos, que no me llamaron porque la persona encargada de anotar los números telefónicos, anotó el mío de forma errónea. Y así, amigos, termina esta historia, jajajajaja. ¿Qué les puedo decir?

And then we concluded that they didn't call me because the person in charge of writing down the phone numbers wrote mine down wrong. And so, friends, this story ends, hahahahahaha. What do you think?

Fue una anécdota llena de estrés y de mucha emoción, pero verdaderamente lo pasé genial. Siempre hay que verle lo positivo a las cosas, esa audición me motivó a tocar la guitarra luego de tanto tiempo. Y me hizo conocer más personas por el camino.

*It was an anecdote full of stress and a lot of emotion, but I really had a great time. You always have to look at the positive side of things, that audition motivated me to play guitar after such a long time. And it made me meet more people along the way. *
