The song Say something is about the painful and difficult end of a relationship.
The lyrics expresses a sense of hopelessness and resignation, the relationships seems beyond repair, but the keep trying to see if it will work, they hope their partner could say something to try to possibly save it. The overall message is one of the song is a despair and a reluctant acknowledgement that the relationship is beyond repair, despite a true desire to make it work.
