Smiley Vixen Shows Teeth at My Trail Camera

Even though she did show she can stand up to aggressive invaders, the Smiley Vixen had otherwise been all smiles and cutes before. But that’s in the past. The cutie is not afraid to also show her uglier side, and she definitely got one.

I’ve had my trail camera by her den for a while. Months. And she was fairly tolerant of it, even though she did look into it a few times with suspicion. Generally, however, she went about her daily, or nightly business without being bothered by the cam.

But now, for whatever reason, she took an objection and showed her teeth at the game cam. At least I think that’s what she was showing her teeth at. There is a possibility there was someone or something behind the camera, but the camera’s mic didn’t seem to pick up anyone else’s sounds, so I tend to lean toward the belief it was in fact the camera the vixen got angry with.

Her anger was expressed with strange hissing sounds that I would normally not guess were coming out of a fox. She even crackled like a bird on a few occasions. Truly bizarre behavior which I can’t explain, though I wish I knew more about foxes to interpret it better.

Either way, despite her hissing, the Smiley Vixen seems to be content in her new den so I hope she’s gonna stick around and won’t start looking for a new home. I’d miss her, but life in the woods is unpredictable and the animals who dwell there are wild. Some are the hunters, some are the hunted, and none knows if they’re gonna be there another day. And I neither do I. I live with that reality every day.
