En la época romántica del ajedrez Steinitz logró proclamarse como el primer campeón del mundo oficial pero esto no quiere decir que no había más jugadores de gran talla, entre ellos el protagonista de hoy Willians Pollock proveniente de Inglaterra y de profesión Médico no pudo dedicarse de lleno al ajedrez debido a la profesión ya mencionada sólo jugaba uno que otro torneo entre ellos el de New York en el año de 1858 en el cual conducía las piezas negras ante un jugador muy hábil como Miksa Weiss quien estaba a cargo de las piezas blancas.
