We all know how wonderful books or the internet can be when used for positive and recreational purposes, they provide us with a lot of knowledge and help us to satisfy our curiosity with questions that we frequently ask ourselves, even if some of them don't make much sense or perhaps lack of importance, at the end of the day, it ends up being a matter only for us.

If you are a person related to music or not necessarily, it is likely that at some point in your life you have asked yourself, Who invented music? What is its origin? When was it made for the first time? and so on, and so many more questions; I in particular always think about it. The truth is that supposedly music has existed since prehistoric times when there was not even writing, and as well as this, supposedly there are many more, that to mention right now would be very boring for you as readers.

Now, the subject that we are talking about right now is the Epitaph of Seikilos or Sícilo, which according to what I was able to investigate is one of the oldest written musical compositions that have been discovered and my intention in this post is to show you a guitar version of this interesting musical element. It should be noted that it is not really known with which instrument it was composed nor the tempo of the song. Obviously at this point there are different versions, adaptations and interpretations of the Epitaph, we have seen on harps, flutes, guitars, chants and many other instruments.

The Epitaph of Seikilos is of Greek origin and probably dates from the first or second century BC. It is written on a marble column and consists of 3 parts: Description, poem and dedication. It is believed that Seikilos was a wealthy man who lived with his wife Euterpe in a city called Tralles, located in what is now Turkey, and that he made this dedication to his wife before her death.

One thing that impresses me about this epitaph is how music is used as a means to express love, affection and feelings of longing, being able to be immortalized in a physical element that can be preserved forever. It also gives me a sense of nostalgia and somehow takes me back to those times when things were purer and simpler.

Anyway, what I bring you in video is a guitar version in which I add some base chords to give it a little more body and make it more appreciable and pleasing to the ear. I would also like to clarify that this version has some variations made in my consideration but none that affect its true essence.

Words from the brief / Palabras del escrito:

"I am an image of stone. Seikilos put me here, where I am forever, the symbol of eternal evocation"

Text of the song / Texto de la canción:

"As long as you live, be joyful. Let nothing disturb you. Life is indeed too brief and time takes its toll"

“Mientras vivas, permanece alegre.
