Surrealism defies logic. Dreams and the workings of the subconscious mind inspire surreal art (French for "superrealism") filled with strange images and strange juxtapositions.

Creative thinkers have always played with reality, but in the early 20th century Surrealism emerged as a philosophical and cultural movement. Driven by the teachings of Freud and the rebellious work of Dadaist artists and poets, Surrealists such as Salvador Dalí, René Magritte and Max Ernst promoted free association and dream imagery. Visual artists, poets, playwrights, composers, and filmmakers sought ways to unleash the psyche and tap into hidden reservoirs of creativity.

The visual artists of the Surrealist movement were a diverse group. The early works of European surrealists often followed the Dada tradition of turning familiar objects into meaningless, satirical works of art. As the Surrealism movement evolved, artists developed new systems and techniques for exploring the irrational world of the subconscious mind. Two trends emerged: Biomorphic (or abstract) and Figurative.

In contrast, the surrealists of the 20th century rebelled against the conventions, moral codes, and inhibitions of the conscious mind. The movement grew out of Dada, an avant-garde approach to art that poked fun at the system. Marxist ideas provoked a disdain for capitalist society and a thirst for social rebellion. Sigmund Freud's writings suggested that higher forms of truth can be found in the subconscious.

The first followers of the surrealist movement were revolutionaries who sought to unleash human creativity. Breton opened an Office of Surreal Research where members conducted interviews and assembled an archive of sociological studies and dream images. Between 1924 and 1929 they published twelve issues of La Révolutionsur réaliste, a journal of militant treatises, reports on suicides and crimes, and explorations. about the creative process.

Salvador Dalí - Spanish Catalan artist Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) was embraced by the Surrealist movement in the late 1920s only to be expelled in 1934. However, Dalí gained international fame as an innovator who embodied the spirit of Surrealism , both in his art and in his flamboyant and irreverent demeanor. Dalí conducted widely publicized dream experiments in which he reclined in bed or in a bathtub while drawing his visions. He claimed that the melting clocks in his famous painting, "The Persistence of Memory," stem from self-induced hallucinations.

Jean Arp - Born in Strasbourg, Jean Arp (1886–1966) was a Dadaist pioneer who wrote poetry and experimented with a variety of visual media such as torn paper and wooden relief constructions. His interest in organic forms and spontaneous expression was aligned with the surrealist philosophy. Arp exhibited with surrealist artists in Paris and became best known for fluid and biomorphic sculptures such as "Tête et coquille" (Head and Shell). During the 1930s, Arp moved to a non-prescriptive style that he called Abstraction-Création.
