Ballade by Burgmüller

In this post, we are going to take a look at a study for piano, composed by Friedrich Burgmüller. If you have never played the piano before or you are not expert in less-known composers of piano music, you may ask who he was?
So, Friedrich Burgmüller was a German composer, from the time when playing the piano was popular in the middle class.
As an important factor in cultural uplift, many Central European composers have dedicated their opus to piano music in the form of etudes (studies), as part of the development of technical and expressive abilities to play the piano. So did Burgmüller also. We can highlight his opuses of studies op. 100, op.105, op.109, where these compositions are not only dry technical exercises but interesting works, also for concert performance.
My students love fast etudes, and this one I play in this video is one of those. It is study number 15, Ballade, from Melodic studies op.100.
The structure is ABA form, with an added final part. The tempo is fast, with repeated staccato chords in the right hand, while the left hand has a melodic passage. The drama is evoked with some dissonant accented notes in the left hand (A natural).
In the second (B) part, the character is mild, with a nice expressive melody in the right hand. After repeating the first part, the study ends with the addition of 10 bars, where the passages are repeated in both hands, and with chords at the end.
