Danube... before we hit the road again...

So we hit the road again some days ago. It was our trip back to Spain, just those 2500km that we had to drive through several European countries. If you are going to do one day a similar route to ours, continue to read this post and take a look in the video to see how was the road back. If you are not going to make the same silly journey, anyway, you can watch the video and imagine you travel with us :)) Here come some details about the roads, the countries we drove through and why we have chosen a different route this time.

We always take the Mediterranean highway ( Autopista del Mediterráneo, Ap-7) in Spain, actually just a few kilometres from the place we live we can enter this highway and drive directly to France, which is some 650 km away from us. That is the easiest part of the road always. I think we could drive this route almost with closed eyes! Well, it would not be a smart choice, so don't take this as a piece of advice on how to drive.

In France, we continue with A9 (La Languedocienne) passing Perpiñan, Narbona, Beziers, Montpellier until Nimes, that is where we take the A54 and later A8 (from Nimes, towards Arles, Aix-en-Provence, Cannes, Niza, Monaco). That is a nice part, but too much traffic always, and many tolls. In Italy from Ventimiglia until Genova, very, very nice but at least 120 tunnels that you have to pass through. That can be exhausting for the concentration, however, the main problem this year was the works on the roads. During all that route, but the worse was around Genova. It makes you go much slower as there are congestions. Then the usual route passing Novi Ligure, Plasencia, Cremona, Brescia, Verona, Vicenza, Venezia. After Italy, it is Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia.

    Road works in Italy

One of the reasons we decided to change the route coming back to Spain was the road works around Genova. We went without changes until Brescia, but then continued to Milan, Turin, and that is when the interesting part started. Mountains, mountains and more mountains. Cool! And a tunnel of 12 km that connects Italy with France. The price was not so cool, but it was worth trying out of this new route towards Chambery, Grenoble, Valence, Avignon, and then straight down to Spain.

Will we repeat this route through the northern part of Italy? I am not sure at the moment, what was positive is that the road was not busy at all, no traffic jam, no accidents. A new road, new landscape, that was positive too. Not so positive was the higher price we paid for the highways and that that tunnel. And the lack of the sea views like this:

Somewhere close to Savona, Italy, Mediterranean sea. We missed these views in the travel back, but had a lot of mountain landscape!
