"Wrinkles will go where the smiles have been."
    -- Jimmy buffet

Welcome to part two of my
    Face Yoga series.
Today I'll be getting under the skin, looking at how it is made up, and exploring how our skin ages. There is also a brief face yoga routine focusing on the main areas where ageing first occurs. Please be sure to follow along.

    The Skin

The skin is the largest organ of the body that is made up of water, proteins, fats, and minerals. There are muscles in the face just like the body, that help us to contract and move areas of our face to create what we call facial expressions. These muscles in the face are similar to the rest of the body, but these muscles, help to move the skin, not joints. For example the skin around our eyes, nose, and mouth.

Do you sometimes look in the mirror and wonder who is that person looking back at you? That ageing you?

I do, sometimes! There are days when I have a more youthful look than others. Lack of sleep, dehydration, and lack of physical activities sometimes make me look haggard because the absence of these reduces the flow of oxygen to my face.
It's just like after washing your hair.
Do you ever notice how revived your face looks too? This is because the massaging of the scalp and the water opens the pores and improves the circulation of blood in the head; This causes the face to look brighter and vibrant.

There is more to ageing though!

We cannot defy gravity and ageing is inevitable, but research has shown that the main cause of ageing skin, is a result of loss of fat. This I will explain below by discussing the different layers of the skin.

The skin is made up of three (3) layers; I like to think of it like a fruit - the outer, middle and inner parts.

    First Layer is the Epidermis:

This is the area of your face that you touch and feel with your hands; known as the epidermis of the skin. This area of the skin is very sensitive and should be protected because it helps to prevent the body from absorbing harsh chemicals from pollution in the air. It also helps the body to retain moisture and produces a natural protective oil for the skin.

💡 My tip for ways we can protect the layer of our skins to prevent premature ageing would be to, avoid the use of harsh chemicals for cleaning and moisturing that skin, and also, to apply gentle touch with clean hands to the face at all times. Also, wear protective skincare for harsh elements such as the sun, strong winds, and snow.

    Second Layer is the Dermis:

This is the layer that is very important because it's made up of two very important proteins, namely collagen, and elastin. As we age, our body's ability to produce these reduces, and this is where face yoga can help to keep the nerves and connective tissues of the face stronger and more intact.

This area of the body also regulates our body temperature and our sweat glands.
Therefore, it's important that we maintain the skin by strengthening and toning to improve the flexibility and elasticity, and strength of the skin.

💡 My tip to protecting this layer of the skin, is to keep as hydrated as possible. Replenish the body with fluids and vitamins and minerals. Also finding ways to strengthen the skin with exercises such as those in face yoga.

Third and deepest layer of the skin:

This is known as the Subcutaneous layer, which I like to think of as the padding to protect the bones, nerve endings, and skin of the fat. The reason is simply that this layer is made up of mainly fat. No one likes to hear fat, however, fat plays an important role in the skin's vitality, elasticity, and youthful look. I like to think of the fat under my skin as cushioning to protect the bones. When we lose lat from our face (something that happens naturally from ageing), we look older, because, without the fat, the skin becomes saggy and loose.

💡 My tip is that most of the ageing happens in the second layer, so if we keep those )the collagen, elastin, and cell production healthy, then we will not have to worry too much about this third deepest layer, because the body will be better able to maintain it naturally.

Face Yoga (see video demonstration and tutorial)

Why you should try it, part 1 of my series tells you about the benefits to be gained from practicing facial yoga. This post highlighted that face yoga is for wellbeing and inner self, not just physical appearance, and also, that poor posture can cause inefficient breathing and tiredness.

Some of the most important things to remember when doing facial yoga exercises are, proper posture and proper breathing.

    • Proper posture:

We tend to slouch and hold onto tension in our bodies unconsciously, that over time can affect other common roles such as breathing. It is important, whether doing face yoga in a seating or standing position, that our body is well aligned - neck in line with shoulders, and chin up with an elongated neck.

Your head should be level and upright, as if there's an imaginary string holding it upright. This is a good posture to support the neck.

    • Proper breathing:

Taking deep breaths produces more oxygen in the body. With face yoga, deep breathing is done from the belly (diaphragm) and we inhale and exhale through the nose, not the mouth.

Relaxed Square Shoulders, relaxed face, relaxed eyes, relaxed mouth.

    • Clean hands:

Facial yoga does not require any additional product, however feel free to use a serum if you would like. The main important thing is that we practice with clean hands, as there will be gentle touching of the face such as eyes, mouth, and nose, that could spread germs and bacteria.

This you will observe and engage in while watching and following the instructions and face yoga routine in my attached video.

Please note, that this is a basic video especially focusing on the skin and the muscles of the face. In the video, you will see some simple and effective exercises mainly for the orbital muscles (associated with the eye socket), the oral muscles (around the mouth, the forehead, and the jawline.

In essence, as the quote by Jimmy Buffet above says, "Wrinkles will go where smiles have been."

This is exactly how the formation of wrinkles occurs. There are two types of wrinkles:

    1. Dynamic (I hate to think that wrinkles are dynamic) - these for example occur when we smile or frown. So they appear when one of these such actions is done.
    2. Static: these are when the lines and wrinkles occur as we age, due to less collagen and elastin formation. Great example, the laugh lies around our mouth.

My static wrinkles are fairly prominent, but that I would never change, simply because I have had lots of happy and pleasing encounters through my journey that have given me much laughter.

🙏 I thank you so much for reading this all the way to the end.
I am an active yogi, and I am currently studying and practicing face yoga, and I'm optimistic that with consistent and continual practice I will gain more benefits, as research has shown that Facial Yoga is most beneficial for the age group of persons 50 years and over.

Please feel free to comment, and I hope you will enjoy the video and gain benefits from the moves too:)
