The Athenian Owl Tetradrachm was issued in Athens and used throughout the city-states of Ancient Greece for more than nearly 500 years. Introduced in 510 BC, the coins were produced regularly in Athens through 38 BC. The silver Tetradrachm replaced didrachms and introduced an effigy of Athena to Greek currency.
Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse of the 2020 Niue Athena Owl Stackable 1 oz Silver Coins. In this effigy, Her Majesty is found in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This tiara is believed to be her favorite, features on countless denominations of British and Commonwealth currency, and was gifted to her grandmother, Mary of Tec, when she married her grandfather King George V.
Reverse
The Athenian owl is featured on the reverse of all 2020 Niue Athena Owl Stackable 1 oz Silver Coins. This design is inspired by the Ancient Greek Tetradrachm and bears an owl on a branch. Behind the owl, there is an olive sprig with a crescent moon above the owls head. There are inscriptions on this side of AOE and 1 oz .999 Fine Silver.
History
2020 Niue Athena Owl Stackable 1 oz Silver Coins have hammered background fields on both sides of the coin. There is a stackable border design around the edge of each coins obverse and reverse field. These alternating raised and lowered elements make it easy to safely stack the coins.
