In 1574 , Louis of Nassau lifted the siege of Maastricht, ending an important conflict in Dutch history.

The siege of Maastricht was one of the first major conflicts in Dutch history, beginning in 1572 and lasting two years. Led by Louis of Nassau, an important leader in the Dutch Revolt (also known as the Eighty Years' War), it was one of two sieges that were fought at Maastricht during the war. The city had been controlled by Spanish forces since 1549 and its recapture was seen as a major victory for the Dutch rebels. During these two years, Louis and his army faced numerous challenges. They had to endure hunger, disease and attacks from Spanish reinforcements sent to lift the siege. In addition, they faced challenges from nature itself including heavy rainfall that caused flooding and destruction to their encampments. However, despite all these challenges, Louis managed to successfully capture Maastricht on July 21st, 1574. The victorious rebel forces celebrated this momentous event with jubilation. This victory demonstrated the strength of Dutch forces at this time and helped inspire other rebellions across Europe against Spanish rule leading to an eventual end of Spanish domination over much of Europe.

In 1822, Haiti invaded the newly-founded Dominican Republic, initiating a long-running territorial dispute.

The territorial dispute between Haiti and the Dominican Republic began in 1822 when an uprising led by Apolinar Mañzuillas overthrew the Haitian-backed Dominican government. Following the coup, Jean-Pierre Boyer, President of Haiti, sought to expand his country’s borders and invaded what is now known as the Dominican Republic. The invasion was successful and for 22 years Haiti maintained control over parts of modern-day Dominican Republic.

In 1844, however, nationalist forces launched a counterattack with plans to liberate their territories from Haitian control. Under the leadership of José Núñez de Cáceres, they were able to defeat Calixte Morniaux's Haitian army at Herrera and by February 27, 1844 they re-established the Dominican Republic as an independent nation.

The conflict has been ongoing since then with various disputes over land boundaries dating back to 1795 when Spain divided Hispaniola into two separate countries: Santo Domingo in the east (now known as the Dominican Republic) and Haiti in the west. In spite of numerous efforts to settle the long-running territorial dispute including peace talks mediated by US diplomats, no definitive solution has been reached between both sides thus far

In 1886, US President Grover Cleveland declared a state of emergency in Seattle due to a surge of anti-Chinese violence.

The violence had been escalating for several years, beginning in 1885 when Seattle voters passed an ordinance that effectively prohibited Chinese from entering the city. This prompted protests from Chinese immigrants and their supporters, including progressive activists who saw this measure as a violation of civil and human rights. The following year, anti-Chinese sentiment reached a fever pitch as mobs of mostly white men began attacking Chinese residents and setting fire to businesses. President Cleveland reacted quickly by using federal troops to quell the riots and restore order in Seattle. Afterward, he issued a formal statement expressing his concern over the situation, while condemning those responsible for the violence. He also declared that anyone who was found guilty of inciting or participating in the riots would be brought to justice. Fortunately, the intervention of federal troops ultimately prevented the situation from worsening any further.

In 1940, Joe Louis defeated Arturo Godoy in fifteen rounds to become the heavyweight boxing champion of the world.

Joe Louis, born Joseph Louis Barrow in 1914, was an American professional boxer and widely regarded as one of the greatest heavyweight champions of all time. He was heralded for his technical prowess in the ring and held the title of World Heavyweight Champion from 1937 to 1949. His 1940 rematch with Arturo Godoy marked a milestone in his career, as he regained the heavyweight title that had been stripped from him after his loss to German boxer Max Schmeling two years earlier.

The fight took place at Chicago Stadium on June 28th and lasted fifteen rounds despite stiff competition from Godoy. It was an epic battle between two powerful fighters, with huge punches landing throughout the fight before Louis eventually emerged victorious. Not only did he regain the title of World Heavyweight Champion, but this win also symbolized a momentous victory over racism as he defended the honor of his country against fascism during a period of political upheaval around the world.

In 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy accused the State Department of being infested with 205 communists, sparking a national controversy.

At a speech in Wheeling, West Virginia on February 9th 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy alleged that the United States State Department was filled with 205 communists and other subversives who had infiltrated the government. This sparked widespread fear of a national security threat and set off a panic which is now referred to as “McCarthyism”. The accusations made by McCarthy were never verified, leading many to believe he had purposely exaggerated his claim to stoke fear and increase his own power in Washington. In subsequent days after the speech, McCarthy began using more broad language such as “enemies” when referring to supposed communists within the State Department, further fueling public panic and drawing ire from President Truman who publicly denounced McCarthy's unsubstantiated claims. Following this event, which later became known as "McCarthyism", Senator McCarthy would continue to make similarly false accusations against various U.S. citizens for years to come; ultimately leading to his censure by the Senate in 1954.
