    About :

    ENGLISH

Ultimate Frisbee came into my life when I was 17 years old and since then I have not been away from it, I started as a player then evolved to team captain and then coach. I have told you about this sport on several occasions and I am not surprised that many of you do not know of its existence because it is a relatively new sport compared to soccer, baseball, basketball, among others that we all already know.

Venezuela was the first Latin American country to travel to an Ultimate Frisbee World Championship in 1991 in Canada and later we became the 4th in the world in one of its categories. The competitive level of Venezuelans was always very high but unfortunately due to the political, economic and social problems of recent years, the diaspora of young Venezuelans caused that Ultimate Frisbee had a significant decline, but those who had to leave for a better future knew how to leave on high in the name of our country in various international competitions, in fact, we already have Venezuelan players in U.S. professional leagues.

In 2018 I had the opportunity to be part of the university selection of Venezuela, who represented our country in the university world cup held in the city of Medellin, Colombia, with the participation of the selections of Chile, Panama, United States, Portugal, Colombia and Venezuela. To attend this world championship we had 8 months of preparation and we formed our national team with university athletes from each region of the country, doing weekly trainings separately in each city and group trainings once a month at the Central University of Venezuela and Simon Bolivar University located in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela.

All our expenses were borne by ourselves as our sport is not yet federated and even if it were it is very unlikely that we would have been able to receive help from the state. It was a difficult few months but we were all focused on achieving our goal. Due to the cost of the trip we decided to go by land, I think it was the most exhausting trip of my life hahaha the athletes who lived in the states closest to the border went first and the rest of us started the trip from Caracas, we traveled all night long, the bus was not comfortable at all so we all arrived at the border exhausted and with muscle pains, they kept us for half a day just to check our passports because at that time many people were emigrating and they had to make sure that we were not going to stay there to live, even though we had an invitation letter issued by the university where the event was going to take place they left us several hours waiting which exhausted our body even more.

Finally they let us pass and several hours later we managed to get our bus ticket from the city of Cucuta to the city of Medellin, we traveled all night, this was our second night sleeping on the bus. We arrived in Medellin in the morning hours and we really just wanted to get to the hotel and rest a little bit even though we were very excited for our adventure and for having the honor of representing Venezuela despite all the adversities.

Upon arrival we had a friendly match to welcome us, it would have been great to have arrived a few days earlier to have the body a little rested but still we had to comply, that night when I touched the bed I think I did not last a second to fall asleep, the next day was the opening of the world cup and we already had our first games. The opening was beautiful, the university orchestra welcomed us and each country designated two athletes to carry their flag during the ceremony.

It would be 5 days of tournament with 2 or 3 matches per day, each match with 90 minutes of duration and we were coming from two days of forced travel plus a friendly match the night before, we were a little scared as we knew we were at a disadvantage with the other countries who traveled by plane with the expenses paid by their universities, but the adrenaline and the love for our country and our sport helped us not to fill our head with negative thoughts, we reviewed together all the effort we had made to be there and between tears we knew that there was no turning back, we had come to win and we would not go home without a trophy in our hands.

Although in Venezuela both the men's and women's teams trained together and we were one team, at this point we were already competing in our respective categories. The first day we won our two games and this gave us a boost to erase the fatigue from our minds, the days went by and my women's team won game after game, we were good athletes and every night before sleeping we all met in one of the rooms to review the successes and mistakes we had had during the day, this helped us to improve and focus on the goal. We reached the semifinals undefeated, every game that passed we played with more passion and commitment, we were the most animated team, we were singing, shouting, dancing, it was our moment and we were enjoying it to the fullest.

    Antonieta 3577.jpg

    Antonieta 3543.jpg

We made it to the final undefeated, the team we would fight for the cup was also undefeated so we were in the same position. We gave everything that was left in our bodies to win and I even think we played with our souls because our muscles were not responding, that day we did not manage to become champions but everyone around us was impressed with our performance because the opposing team was made up of professional players, we did not have the best shoes, nor the best uniform, not even the best coaches but we had something that you only get when you hold on to something that gives you happiness among so much uncertainty and nostalgia, we had passion.

    Antonieta 3572.jpg

We managed to get the title of runner-up but in our hearts we were much more than that, this trophy can be seen in the trophy exhibition of the Central University of Venezuela, and if you see it someday remember this story and know that even if the circumstances seem unfavorable, if you believe in yourself you can achieve anything.

P.S: If you wonder which one is me, I'm the one doing the annotation in the video hahaha.
