The guys wanted to go fishing down the south coast so even though I'm not into angling, I willingly tagged along as there's nothing more soothing for the soul than listening to the ocean and exploring the natural beauty along the seashore and on the rocks.
Fishing is at its best here in wintertime especially when the great Sardine Run is on in Kwazulu Natal, as the game fish follow these large shoals of little silvery fish.
We chose to go to the beach that forms the eastern border of the grounds of the Umdoni Golf Club as it still is totally unspoilt and there are lovely big flat rocks to fish from.
The Umdoni Golf Club is about a 50 minute drive south of Durban, and boasts a stunning setting with the Indian Ocean along the eastern boundary, rolling lush fairways and a beautiful clubhouse with a lovely restaurant that boasts the most stunning views of the Indian Ocean and the golf course.
Just before entering the grounds, one sees the beautiful Cape Dutch style Botha House tucked away behind indigenous bush; this was built as a gift by Sir Frank Reynolds as a holiday residence for South Africa's first Prime minister, Louis Botha who sadly died before the building work was complete in 1920. Nevertheless, this was gifted to his widow who lived there until her death.
Later during the Second World War, Botha House became a convalescent home for British officers.
This gracious building is run as an upmarket guesthouse today.

We parked next to an old lighthouse and ancient building that's showing much wear and tear.
The guys were all sorting out their fishing gear before we take a walk through the pathway across the old south coast main railway line.
Just a short pathway and we were right on the beach with our fishermen spoilt for choice; just one lone fisherman in the distance so they could take their pick; but we stumbled on the ruins of an old building right on the beach.
All we could hear was the sound of the waves breaking and crashing on the rocks.
I had fun finding all kinds of little creatures on the rocks and just enjoying the sea breeze and the music of the ocean!
I had the best seat on the rocks and enjoyed getting the odd fine sea spray on my face.
A lone plane flying very low, but before I could take a pic, it was at a distance already.
The shadows became longer and it was time to pack up and go home.
The only fish to be caught this day were two undersized species, both who lived to see another day as they were returned to the waters!
We had to be satisfied with fish & chips bought at a takeaway!
I hope you enjoyed listening to the ocean with me today!
