In this video we will be talking about chords, we will be diving deep in the later modules but right now I just want to give you a brief introduction to it.
A chord is a collection of pitches being played at the same time, so this is a chord right here, this is also a chord. This is going to make the harmony of the song. Three main components when it comes to music are the melody, the harmony, and the rhythm.
When I am talking about harmony, I am really thinking about the “color” of the song, the feel, the mood, the atmosphere, the vibe. You can have a really catchy melody but by itself, it might sound a bit empty but once you start adding the harmony that’s when it can really fill out your song.
Two chords we will be going over today is the basic major and minor triad and this makes up the majority of the music you hear right now. You might hear something a bit more advanced but once you really break it down it starts with the really simple chord.
A triad is a chord with 3 notes in it. Let’s go over the major chord first. We will be starting at C That's going to be our root, from our root we will be going into a major 3rd and a perfect 5th.
For a minor chord, we are starting with C and the intervals are a minor 3rd, and then a perfect 5th. E Flat and G.

Major 3rd
Perfect 5th
Minor Chord
Root Note
Minor 3rd
Perfect 5th
So the only difference between a major and a minor chord is the semitone moving in the middle. Later on, in the course we will be adding more extensions, inversions, and all that good stuff.
An easy way to practice is just like the scales exercise I told you about in my last video, just pick a random note on the keyboard and create a major and a minor triad.
If you're a musician/music producer/artist, I am also hosting a PsyberX music contest where you will submit 30-second audio of you making/performing a Cyber-Punk type of music.
