Some more CDC data I looked into, this time with the total death number being shown. I looked at the main total number they show on the "Cases" page. Then I looked at the detail data for death counts.
The odd things is that instead of seeing the total count of 67,000, the data for COVID-19 non-pneumonia deaths added to the COVID-19 and pneumonia deaths, only gets to 55,000. That's 12,000 cases missing in the details.
Why is the detailed data for deaths not showing all the cases of total death as they display for everyone to look at?
Well they say it's because of delays from needing death certificates.
"data shown on this page may be incomplete, and will likely not include all deaths that occurred during a given time period, especially for the more recent time periods. Death counts for earlier weeks are continually revised and may increase or decrease as new and updated death certificate data are received from the states by NCHS. COVID-19 death counts shown here may differ from other published sources, as data currently are lagged by an average of 1–2 weeks."
But why display a "total" on other parts of the site, when you don't "provisionally" just add it to the "COVID-19" only column in the details page? Why wait for inflated death certificates to put the numbers in one or another column? If a death certificate is important to know if it's COVID-19 or COVID-19+pneumonia, then why isn't a death certificate required for the total deaths?
If they can't revise the COVID-19 only column after getting a death certificate to say it goes into the COVID+pneumonia column, then the total death count isn't based on death certificates. It's only based on reported cases that don't come from death certificates. Otherwise if the total was based on death certificates, they would also know if its a death with pneumonia as well, and not have any delays in the detailed data. The total isn't based on death certificates, because it's always higher than than the detailed data which they say is based on death certificates.
