This is my entry to the Hive Book Club’s February challenge. You can find out more HERE.
I typed “chinese” into my scribd app search and out popped East Wind: West Wind by Pearl S Buck. The book published in 1930 happens to be her first published novel.
Born an American, she spent the first 40 years of her life in China as her parents were missionaries stationed there. Buck is actually accepted as a Chinese writer, and if you read the book without knowing the author, you’d believe it.
There are two parts to this book. The first part centres around Kwei-lan, who is raised to be the quintessential Chinese girl. However, she is married off to a man who practised medicine in America and believes in some western ideas and sentiments.
The second part of the book is about Kwei-lan’s brother, the first-born son in the family, betrothed to marry a girl from a well-to-do family, who shuns his filial duties and marries an American instead.
Please watch the video to know why I recommend this book for some easy reading.
Thank you for watching😊
Till next time, Carpe Diem❣️
