    About :

When covid first arrived in March I was a bit concerned, as were most of the planet, I presume. Since then we have been through the harshest of lockdowns and now surface under a lighter, although not yet concluded lockdown scenario. Exactly six months ago to the week – at the last Equinox in fact – I went cave hunting along the coast and found a little place for myself.
I was concerned and fearful back then, six months ago, thinking the world was going to be turned upside down. I thought that I might have to head for the hills, so to speak. In my case it would be to head for the shores. Here on the rugged edge of the southernmost coast of Africa, known as the Western Cape province, we have hundreds of miles of remote coastline.
Here and there a few tourist towns or holiday resorts populate the otherwise empty expanse. Locals and international tourists flock to the coast in summer and over the holiday seasons. This particular area that I explore currently, is one of the most beautiful. At the start of lockdown I went looking for a place that I could escape to if the planet went into meltdown.
Thus the name of my blog is “Julescape”. My name is Jules and I’m in the Cape but I also like to escape. I like to escape the busy populated areas and retreat to the natural surroundings which are healthier, with less pollution and crowding. I also like to look at the landscape or seascape from my own point of view, so it is not a landscape or a seascape but a Julescape.
Anyway, jokes aside, I thought it may be a good idea to have a little backup cave that I could retreat to if needed. And I found a really nice little cave actually. The first priority is access to water of course. The particular cave is near a flowing stream. It is a seasonal flow, depending on the rainfall, and back in March, when I discovered the cave, the nearby stream was a small trickle.
Now, six months later, at the September equinox, it is flowing strongly after so much rain these past few months. This is a particularly wet year all around the planet, including here on the south Cape coast of Africa. Looking back now, I can see that my cave would be even more attractive, now that so much water is available. The rock formations provide a protection from the rain and elements.
I could easily light a fire with all the dry bush around, and thus be quite comfortable, especially since Summer is arriving here in the south. The sea is just a few hundred meters away, down the slope of the hillside.
Now you know more about me. I like to spend as much time as possible in the vast empty remote parts of nature, particularly at the coastline, where I live. I enjoy camping outdoors. And I recommend this kind of balance in lifestyle, where we spend some time outdoors for the sake of our health.
Most of us may be sitting indoors at the computer screen all day, for work, study or recreation. Therefore it is important to take time out to be in nature. It is there that we can get the boost to our immune system and also keep our fitness and health up at its best.
It’s also free, depending on where you choose to live. If you live in the city then you will need to evaluate your health and lifestyle every year to see if your choice is serving you well. I have chosen a lifestyle that suits my nature and my love for nature, pun intended.
We work to make money to survive and thrive, and part of thriving is to keep up the immune system. And this can be done by simply experiencing the vast outdoor open space available in nature. Most people on the planet live at the coast because it is the most conducive place to be for good health.
However, anywhere in nature is great, so get out of the cities and into nature as much as possible. You will have an improved lifestyle and immune system. The cities are places of pollution, congestion and urban decay generally. The highest proliferation of covid cases so far are all from regions of the world with the most pollution, including Northern Italy, New York and China. So that is my advice for you today, and all year long. I hope you too can access the beauty of nature wherever you are. I certainly do.
