Happy weekend my Hive Music School family, our music school. I introduce myself today in order to transmit a little bit of my humble knowledge I have about the trombone. This idea I have already several weeks in mind, and I decided to carry it out to help a musician friend, he is a performer of several instruments including the flute, but recently wrote me through a social network, he has told me that he owns a trombone but does not know very well the mechanics to play the instrument in a correct way, this friend of mine is a user of Hive @onos-f, well I will use this post to explain briefly how to produce sound on the instrument and know some musical notes on it.

At the beginning of the video I am giving some indications and basic concepts about the instrument, explaining that it is a Tenor Trombone in Bb. Likewise I also mention that it has 3 fundamental parts that would be bell, rod and mouthpiece, the latter would be a precursor or "microphone" that will amplify the sound we produce with our lips.

    image.png

If you look at the second #35 - #50 sec of the video you will see that I explain how to get a proper vibration in the lips (Because despite what many people think, in order to produce a sound in the instrument there must be a vibration, because if you just blow it will not produce any sound except the one produced by the air coming out of the bell).

Then I explain that you have to blow, and go slowly joining the lips until you get the sound of vibration, that is one of the most appropriate ways to do it.

Below is a longer video on the vibration issue:

Further on at minute 1:30 sec, I explain the difference between a normal tenor trombone and one with a transposer. Basically it is very little obviating the difference in size that the 2 instruments have, since this will depend on the brand and model of the instrument.

    image.png

Ok, the most important difference is the transposer, since both are Bb tuned instruments, but the trombone with transposer when we press it would become an F tuned trombone as long as we press the transposer, otherwise it would still be a Bb tuned trombone.

    image.png

    Note:

The trombone is going to be tuned playing the note Bb, when you tune the trombone yourself and someone else picks up the instrument to play, it will have to be re-tuned, since the tuning is not the same for each person. This instrument is not like a guitar, that you tune the strings and every person can play with it, it is not at all the same, far from this, we have the trombone that is a more personal instrument in the sense that if you tune it that will be your tuning, another person that is going to play a song with your trombone, will have to tune it himself, since it will not be the same tuning for both.

Well brother, by minute 4:00 I begin to explain briefly what notes are in each position of the trombone. For starters this instrument has 7 positions which are inaccurate since you can have the instrument correctly tuned and for example you play the note "A" which is in 2nd position exactly 2 fingers after 1st position, but if you move just a little the tuning pump, this will change and the note "A" may be 2.5 fingers away from the first position, for this fact the trombone has 7 inaccurate positions.

I leave you this Youtube video in which you can observe much better the positions of the trombone:

Well, to know which notes are in each position, you just need to learn all the notes that are in the first position, I explain. The first note that we play in the first position is the low Bb, if you lower the rod to the 2nd position you would have lowered a semitone, that means that you would be playing the note "A", Ok and if you lower the rod to the 3rd position again you would have lowered another semitone then you would be playing the note "Lab" and so on with all the positions of the instrument. I hope you understand, haha I'm not that good at explaining.

Nothing brother, you just need to learn how to control the air flow, but I'll leave that for another post. For now I hope this information has been helpful!

A big hug my brothers, God bless you and your talent!
