Hi Hivers! Today I want to share a little of my experience and a reflection during the quarantine...

Años atrás siendo una joven violista en el sistema Nacional de Orquestas (El sistema) en Caracas, ver clases individuales de instrumento y clases magistrales con maestros internacionales era muy común gracias a Dios. Conforme pasaban los años las clases magistrales iban bajando en número, igualmente los maestros de las cátedras iban disminuyendo por una razón u otra y hasta mis profesores se mudaron quedándome por casi 4 años sin ver clases individuales. No quiere decir que no trabajara o estudiara y pidiera ayuda a otros profesores incluso de otros instrumentos. Me adentre más en la música de cámara, lo que quiere decir que veía clases junto a un grupo de personas.

Years ago when I was a young violist in Caracas Orchestra Nacional Sistem (El Sistema) taking individual and master class of your principal instrument with an international professor was very common, thanks God. But as the years went by the number of masterclass were going down and the main professors too for one or another reason. Even my professor moved away eventually leaving me without classes for almost 4 years. That doesn't mean that I do not work or study by myself or ask other teachers. I start to be more in camera groups, that means that I see classes with a small group of persons.

Con la cuarentena mundial sabemos que toda actividad se detuvo, los salones de clase ahora están vacíos pero la era digital subió un escalón. Desde el mes de julio logré ver casi 10 clases magistrales de viola con 4 maestros internacionales como: Jennifer Stumm, Joaquín Riquelme, Isabel Villanueva y Mikhail Zemtsor, a través de la plataforma Zoom gracias al Conservatorio Itinerante Inocente Carreño, renovado o más bien afirmando mi amor incondicional a la Viola y recordando que todos somos un mundo, que vemos las cosas a nuestra manera y aprendemos de manera diferente.

During the worldwide quarantine we know all activity stops, the class rooms are now empty but the digital era steps forward. In July I achieved to watch almost 10 master classes through Zoom platform with 4 international viola masters like: Jennifer Stumm, Joaquin Riquelme, Isable Villanueva y Mikhail Zemtsor, thanks to the Inocente Carreño Itinerant Conservatory, reaffirming my unconditional love for Viola and remembering that every head is a world, everybody sees things in their own ways and everybody learns in a different way.

Lamentablemente no tuve la oportunidad de participar activamente de las clases, me refiero a tocar en las clases, hasta este mes de agosto donde un amigo muy querido me escribió en cuanto se enteró que harían una clase magistral de viola organizado por la Miami Youth Orchestra con el Maestro Modesto Marcano (no, no somos parientes…), investigué sobre él tiene una cuenta de Instagram muy activa y educativa, y acepté participar. Me preparé, dije con firmeza qué iba a tocar, invité a una amiga a participar y ya no había vuelta atrás debía hacer lo que tenía que hacer.

Unfortunately I don’t have the chance to participate in those classes in an active way, I mean that I don’t play in those classes. Until this August when a really dear friend wrote to me when he found out that Miami Youth Orchestra was organizing a Viola masterclass with Modesto Marcano (no, we are not related…). I investigated the master and found that his Instagram account is very active and educative so I accept to participate in the class. I prepared myself for the class, firmly said what I was going to play, invited a friend to participate as well and there was no going back, I had to do what I had to do.

El 7 de agosto fue la clase, tenía tiempo sin sentir tanta ansiedad y miedo para tocar frente a un profesor hasta que lo hice. No estoy segura si fue porque estaba en el cuarto con solo el celular o todo la preparación mental que tuve durante el día o que el profesor realmente daba esa sensación de paz, pero fue una clase muy relajada, amena, divertida y aprendí muchísimo tanto de mi clase como de la revisión de los demás también.

August 7th was the class, I had time without feeling so much anxiety and fear of playing in front of a teacher until I did. I don’t know if it was because I was in my room with just the cellphone or all the mental preparation that I had during the day or was the feeling of peace that came from the teacher, but was a relaxing, pleasant and fun class. I learn very much of my class and the review of the other players.

Las oportunidades llegan cuando menos te lo esperas, ver clase con maestros internacionales en esta época pudo haber sido imposible para traerlos a Venezuela pero pudimos conversar con ellos y hacerles llegar nuestras dudas a través de una plataforma digital. También creí que no podría ver clases o conferencias y gracias a que alguien pensó en mí logré participar en la actividad. Siempre hay que estar atentos cuando llegan las oportunidades, mantenernos ocupados y sentirnos vivos.

The opportunities come when you least expect it. Taking classes with international masters during this time in Venezuela may have been impossible, but we could talk to them and leave our doubts through a digital platform. Also I thought that I couldn’t take classes or watch a conference, but thanks that someone thought of me I achieved to participate actively in a class. We always have to pay attention when the opportunities come by, keep us busy and feel alive.
